Sarah Cartmill became the fourth head coach in St. John Fisher women’s basketball history in July 2024. She came to Fisher after five seasons as the head coach of SUNY Fredonia.
The Cardinals went 18-9 overall (13-3 Empire 8 regular season) and reached the semifinals in the conference tournament in Cartmill’s first season in charge of the program. Senior guard Sidney Tomasso led the conference in multiple statistical categories, including scoring, total rebounds and double-doubles, en route to being named Empire 8 Player of the Year for the second straight season. She also earned first-team All-Region III from D3hoops.com and honorable mention All-America honors from the United States Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
The Cardinals also excelled in the classroom during Cartmill’s first year, earning a spot on the Division III Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top-25 Team Honor Roll. The Cardinals' 3.838 GPA marked the third highest in Division III and the ninth highest among teams in all three NCAA divisions.
During her time at Fredonia State, Cartmill guided the Blue Devils to two SUNYAC playoff appearances. She coached three all-SUNYAC honorees, including 2023-24 Rookie of the Year Grace Alexander, and had 33 student-athletes make the SUNYAC Honor Roll.
Cartmill began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ithaca College during the 2005-06 season. She then spent eight seasons as a Division I assistant coach – four each at St. Bonaventure University and Binghamton University, her alma mater – before landing her first DIII head coaching position at Bard College before the 2014-15 season. After __ seasons at Bard, Cartmill served one season (2017-18) as an assistant coach at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
Inducted into the Binghamton Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010, Cartmill amassed 1,836 points (third in BU history) and 784 rebounds (fifth in BU history) as a collegiate player from 1998-2002. She averaged 18.4 points and seven rebounds per game and scored 20 or more points 11 times en route to being named the America East Conference Player of the Year as a senior in 2001-02, Binghamton’s first year as an NCAA Division I member.
The Bearcats went 94-22 overall (.810) and an incredible 46-4 on their home court during Cartmill’s four seasons on the team. They played in the postseason every year, making the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1999.
After graduating, she continued playing basketball in Ireland and Denmark while coaching school and club teams in both countries from 2002-05. She played one season for the Sisu Basketball Club in Denmark and led the team to its first Danish National Cup championship since 1999, averaging 20 points and nine rebounds and being named tournament MVP.
Cartmill has also been inducted into the Ithaca High School and New York State Section 4 halls of fame.
