The St. John Fisher College baseball team won two of its three games at Muhlenberg College over the weekend. After having its five-game winning streak snapped with a 14-11 loss on Friday evening, the Cardinals bounced back on Saturday and won 10-7 and 9-6 in the doubleheader.
Chad King (C.W. Baker/Plainville) played in both games on Saturday and went 6-for-11 with two home runs, seven RBI and four runs scored. The senior infielder went 5-for-6 with four runs scored in the first game.
In Saturday’s second game, King and Jared Tiffin (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Sherrill) each hit three-run homers in the third inning to lift the Cardinals to victory. Tiffin started in all three games and batted .500 (7-for-14) with four runs scored.
Sophomore Jon Gibbs (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford) went 4-for-8 with seven walks and four runs scored, while starting at third base in Fisher’s three games.
Sophomore Jason Nevada (Greece Arcadia/Rochester) batted .462 (6-for-14) with five runs scored and two doubles, while playing error-free defense at shortstop.
Classmates Andrew Van Slyke (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Rome) and David Convertini (Williamsville East/Williamsville) each went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Convertini hit his first career home run in Saturday’s first game. Marc Montesano (New Hartford/New Hartford) extended his season-long hitting streak and scored four runs on the weekend, while John Quartironi (Williamsville East/Williamsville) scored four runs and stole three bases.
Dave Roth (Churchville-Chili/Rochester) drove in five runs on two doubles, while Kevin Wing (Webster Thomas/Webster) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in Friday’s game.
Pitcher Greg McKeown (Avon/Avon) struck out nine batters in 8.1 innings to earn the win in Saturday’s first game, while Justin Lutes (Charles O. Dickerson/Trumansburg) retired both batters he faced to earn the save.
Dan Jurik (Vestal/Vestal) scattered nine hits, while fanning seven over six innings to earn the win in the nightcap.
Fisher (8-2) will return to action on Wednesday at Elizabethtown College.
