PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University baseball team dropped a tough one at home on Friday afternoon, falling to Sage, 13-3, at Dugan Yard in Empire 8 action. The Cardinals fall to 24-7 (13-3) on the season with the loss.
Sage, entering the game at 27-5 and 16-1 in conference, controlled the game from the opening pitch. Fisher managed seven hits on the afternoon but struggled to generate consistent offense against Sage ace Evan Grimes, who went a complete eight innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out six. Mario Cubello led the Cardinals at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Ryan Vanderlip went 2-for-4, and Jacob Penafeather added a double. Jack Griffin, Jordan Perry, and Jackson Frey each contributed a hit as well, while Austin Droge and Hunter Fales each drove in a run via sacrifice fly.
On the mound, Robert Leach was chased in the first inning after Sage's lineup erupted for five runs on three hits and four walks. Luke Horton came on in relief and provided three solid innings, keeping Sage scoreless through the second, third, and fourth. Sean Cleary followed with two frames but ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing three runs on a pair of hits, two hit batsmen, and two stolen bases. Caleb Clark worked the seventh and eighth innings, surrendering three runs — one unearned — before Ryan Fitzpatrick and Daniel Dorman finished out the game. Fisher's staff combined to allow 13 runs on 13 hits and issued seven walks on the afternoon.
How It Happened
Sage set the tone immediately in the first inning, sending nine batters to the plate against Robert Leach. Nick Irizarry singled to lead off, Anthony Rizzo drew a walk, and Evan Grimes loaded the bases with another free pass. A wild pitch scored Irizarry before Jayden Kennedy struck out. Collin Casey then singled to left to score Rizzo, and Darren Dengler followed with an RBI single to center to make it 3-0. A second wild pitch allowed Connor Griffin — who had struck out and reached on the miscue — to put the Cardinals in a deeper hole, and a Nick Chicaway sacrifice fly scored another run. John Kelleher then drew a walk to reload the bases and a Nick Irizarry walk-off RBI walk capped the five-run frame at 5-0. Luke Horton came on and got Anthony Rizzo to end the inning.
Fisher went quietly in the first four innings against Grimes, who was sharp from the start. The Cardinals had their best early chance in the fourth when Jordan Perry singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, but Grimes stranded him as Fisher left multiple runners on base throughout the early going.
The Cardinals finally got on the board in the fifth inning. Mario Cubello doubled to center field and moved to third on an error by Sage third baseman Jayden Kennedy. Noah Pohrte drew a walk to load the bases, and Austin Droge lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Cubello for Fisher's first run, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
Fisher added two more in the sixth in a two-out rally. Jack Griffin singled and Ryan Vanderlip followed with a base hit. Jackson Frey then singled to load the bases, and Mario Cubello drove in Griffin with a sacrifice fly. Hunter Fales followed immediately with a sacrifice fly of his own to score Vanderlip, trimming the score to 5-3.
Sage answered with a dominant performance the rest of the way. The Gators scored three more in the sixth inning against Sean Cleary — loading the bases on a hit by pitch, fielder's choice, and single before Jayden Kennedy was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Collin Casey singled in two more, and the inning ended with the score 8-3. Sage added a run in the seventh on a John Kelleher fielder's choice after Nick Chicaway stole two bases, then pushed across two more in the eighth on a Kennedy RBI groundout and Connor Griffin's RBI double. Two additional runs in the ninth off Daniel Dorman closed out the 13-3 final.
