UTICA, N.Y. – Eight St. John Fisher men's lacrosse players tallied multiple points to lead the No. 11 Cardinals to an 18-10 Empire 8 Conference road victory over Utica on Wednesday night at Gaetano Stadium.
Winners of three straight games, the Cardinals improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in E8 play with the victory. Utica dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Senior midfielder Lane Edinger tallied five points for the third time this season to lead the Cardinals, scoring three goals and dishing out two assists. Freshman attackman Grady Swidersky matched his season-high with four points on a goal and three helpers.
Junior midfielder Scott Donaldson and junior attacker Scott Bovard both scored three goals. Senior midfielder Nick Hauman, junior attackman Garrett Sutton and sophomore attackman Graham Kesselring each scored twice, while freshman midfielder Hayden Lauer had a goal and an assist.
Sophomore attackman Logan Welch (goal), freshman midfielder Darren Vogt (assist) and freshman defender Jake Vernieri (assist) also recorded points for the Cardinals.
St. John Fisher senior goalkeeper Tyler Manning played 50-plus minutes and made five saves. Junior Ian McIntyre stopped three shots in just over nine minutes of action.
How It Happened
Edinger scored two of his three goals in the first quarter as the Cardinals jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Donaldson, Sutton, Hauman and Swidersky accounted for the other four Fisher tallies. Swidersky recorded two of his three assists in the frame.
After the teams each scored three goals over the first nine minutes and change in the second quarter, the Cardinals ended the frame with a 3-0 run on strikes from Bovard, Lauer and Sutton to take a 12-5 lead into halftime. Bovard scored all three of his goals in the quarter.
The Cardinals' string of unanswered goals reached seven in the third quarter as Donaldson scored twice and Hauman added his second of the contest, pushing the lead to 10 goals, 15-5. Edinger completed his hat trick early in the fourth, and Kesselring scored twice in the final 10 minutes to round out the Cardinals' scoring.
