PITTSFORD, NY - The St. John Fisher University baseball team finished a dominant sweep of Keuka College on Monday afternoon with an 18-5 victory, their fifth straight victory, and fifth straight contest scoring 18 or more runs. After the sweep, their record improves to 14-5 overall and 5-1 in Empire 8 play.
How It Happened
Fisher continued their blazing hot hitting, scoring 18 runs on 14 hits and four walks, only striking out twice. The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first, as junior outfielder Jackson Frey drove in two runners with a triple. The barrage of run-scoring extra-base hits continued in the top of the second, as sophomore outfielder Jordan Perry tripled, senior infielder Jack Griffin doubled, and sophomore infielder Austin Droge drilled his third home run of the season, extending the Cardinal lead to 7-0.
Keuka got on the board in the bottom of the third, as a Fisher error followed by a Patrick Altpeter two-run single cut their deficit to 7-2. Both Wolves runs were unearned.
Fisher responded immediately to the Keuka tallies, as Perry singled to lead off the inning and Griffin drove him in on the very next pitch with a double. Frey then roped his second triple of the game to drive in Griffin. The Cardinals continued to put the ball in play, and after a Keuka pitching change, back-to-back Wolves errors led to two more runs and an 11-2 score.
In the fifth, Perry singled and stole second, and the Cardinals took advantage of a wild pitch and an error to manufacture two more runs. Graduate infielder Mario Cubello and freshman catcher Hunter Fales then knocked back to back singles, pushing the score to 15-2.
Keuka gained some momentum, holding the Fisher offense at bay and scoring runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but it wasn't enough. In the seventh, Griffin scored on an error off the bat of Cubello, and then Fales put the exclamation mark on the victory with a two-run home run, his first collegiate homer.
Senior Benjamin Huckans got the start on the mound for the Cardinals, going five strong innings allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out two. Sophomore Nathan Benjamin and senior Dylan Becker each worked an inning of relief, holding the Wolves without an earned run in the final two frames.
