Baseball Scores 18 Runs, Wallops Elmira

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher baseball team used a seven-run third inning as part of a 18 run barrage to take down Elmira 18-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Dugan Yard. The Cardinals improved to 11-5 (2-1 Empire 8) with the midweek victory.

How It Happened

The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first, as graduate infielder Mario Cubello drove in sophomore infielder Austin Droge on a fielder's choice. Senior infielder Jack Griffin followed up with an RBI groundout, knocking in sophomore outfielder Jordan Perry and increasing the Cardinal lead to 2-0. In the second, Perry knocked in two more with a 2-RBI single.

Fisher opened the floodgates in the third, as freshman shortstop Jacob Penafeather continued the scoring with a 2-run knock into left field, one of three hits for the rookie on the day. Along with a Cubello triple and an RBI single from senior outfielder Noah Pohrte, the inning was capitalized by a long 3-run homer off the bat of Droge. The seven-run third extended the Cardinal lead to 11-0.

Elmira broke the shutout as a home run from Brady Buttice tarnished an otherwise clean day on the mound for Fisher.

The Cardinals' bats stayed hot in the fourth, as Penafeather roped an RBI double and Perry knocked in two with a base hit of his own. The exclamation point was in the sixth inning, as senior infielder Jake Crantz and junior outfielder Jackson Frey each launched two-run home runs to extend the lead to 18-1.

Sophomore Sean Cleary got the start on the bump for the Cardinals, twirling five innings allowing only the home run and one additional hit, as well as a walk. The South Carolina native struck out nine Soaring Eagles. Senior Benjamin Huckans finished off the shortened contest on the mound, pitching two shutout innings allowing one hit and striking out two.
