PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Junior attacker Chelsea Lopata and senior attacker Dharma Makarowsky tallied four points apiece to lead the No. 23 St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team to an 11-4 victory over SUNY Cortland on Tuesday at Growney Stadium.
The Cardinals (3-3) ended a two-game losing skid with the victory, while the Red Dragons (4-3) had their winning streak snapped at three games. The win also marked Fisher's fourth in a row over Cortland.
One of Fisher's top offensive players, Lopata, who missed the first five games of the season, scored three goals on four shots and dished out an assist. Makarowsky buried four goals to match her season high.
The Cardinals also got a goal apiece from sophomore defender Chelsea Mesick, sophomore attacker Chloe Scanlan, junior attacker Ellie Leisen and senior midfielder Kaley Griffin. Five of Fisher's 11 tallies came on free-position shots.
Senior defender Maddie Lowney anchored the Cardinals' defense, causing four turnovers and recovering four ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Cross made five saves while playing the full 60 minutes.
Sydney Elizalde and Kristen Javenes each recorded two points for the Red Dragons. Elizdale scored twice, while Javenes finished with a goal and an assist.
How It Happened
Makarowsky accounted for the game's first three goals, including a free-position strike in the opening quarter, giving the Cardinals early control. Lopata and Mesick converted free-position opportunities early in the second to push the lead to five before Cortland finally broke through.
Scanlan added another with the Cardinals a player up with about five minutes left in the half, and Lopata followed two minutes later to make it 7–1. Elizalde scored twice in the final two minutes of the second quarter, trimming Fisher's lead to 7–3 heading into halftime.
Lopata completed her hat trick early in the third, then assisted on Leisen's goal a few minutes later as the Cardinals' advantage grew to 9–3. After Emma Dempsey tallied Cortland's lone goal of the second half, Griffin answered on a free-position attempt to restore the six-goal cushion.
