PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher softball team (8-4) snapped an 11-game losing streak to the University of Rochester on Saturday with a 4-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at the SJF Softball Complex. The Yellowjackets claimed the second game, beating the Cardinals 18-7 in five innings.
Game One: St. John Fisher 4, University of Rochester 3
The Yellowjackets opened the scoring in the top of the second when Marie Kinchington launched a solo home run. One inning later, Rochester added to its lead as All Kim tripled down the right‑field line, driving in Jensen Sminchak.
The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the third and surged ahead. With one out, senior Gracie Curella drew a walk, and one batter later, freshman Sarah Gross singled to right field to put runners on first and third. Junior Taylor Shackleton followed by blasting a three‑run home run, giving the Cardinals a 3-2 advantage.
Rochester responded in the top of the fourth. Rowan Mulholland led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs, Ilana Weiss singled to center, scoring Mulholland to even the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, with one out and the score still tied, sophomore Julia Hollister delivered the decisive blow—a solo home run to left field that gave the Cardinals a 4-3 lead. Junior pitcher Molly Kuhn set down the Yellowjackets in order in the top of the seventh inning, locking down the victory.
Kuhn, who pitched all seven innings, struck out five batters and did not walk any. She earned credit for her fourth victory of the season.

Game Two: St. John Fisher 7, University of Rochester 18
The Cardinals came out firing in the bottom of the first. With one out and two runners in scoring position, junior Emily McManus singled to shortstop to drive in both runners and give the Cardinals an early 2–0 lead. Junior CC Holmes then walked, moving McManus to second. With two outs, sophomore Maddy Schubach singled to shortstop to bring in another run and extend the lead to 3–0.
Rochester answered quickly in the top of the second. With one out and runners on first and third, Sminchak scored on a catcher's error to cut the deficit to two. Madi Paige followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in another run and making it a 3–2 game.
In the bottom of the second, the Cardinals added to their lead. With one out, Madi Rose singled to third base, and Gross followed with a two‑run home run to center field to make it 5–2. Shackleton then delivered a solo home run—her second of the day—to push the lead to four. With two outs, senior Isabella Mahar homered to left‑center, giving the Cardinals a 7–2 advantage.
The Yellowjackets began to build momentum in the top of the third inning. Ally Kim drew a leadoff walk, and Riley Laygo doubled to right field to put two runners in scoring position. Mulholland singled to left to drive in a run, and Kinchington followed with a home run to center field to cut the deficit to one.
With two outs, Madi Paige singled to right to put runners on the corners. Savanna Hernandez then doubled to center to tie the game at 7–7. Kim later returned to the plate and singled to right to drive in two runs, giving Rochester its first lead of the game. With a runner on third, Laygo capped the inning with a home run to center, making it 11–7.
Rochester added to its lead in the fourth inning, as Sminchak hit the sixth home run of the game to extend the Yellowjackets' advantage to five.
Later in the inning, with one out and runners on first and second, Laygo singled down the right‑field line to score a run. Mulholland drew a walk, and Kim scored on a wild pitch to make it 14–7. With two outs and a runner on second, Kinchington hit her second home run of the game to push the lead to nine. Sminchak followed with a two‑run home run to cap the scoring.
