CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Freshman Jonah Vormwald and senior Bryce Riffel owned the face-off X, and six Cardinals posted multi-point outings as No. 11 St. John Fisher opened a challenging non-conference stretch with a 15–10 win over Washington College on Saturday.
The Cardinals improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2019 with the victory. Washington College, which entered the day on a three-game winning streak, dropped to 5-2.
The Cardinals finished 23-of-28 on face-offs, with Vormwald going 16-of-19 and Riffel 7-of-9. Three of Washington College's five face-off wins came in the third quarter alone.
Junior attacker Garrett Sutton and junior midfielder Robbie Salit each posted five points to power the Cardinals' offense. Sutton matched his career-high with four goals and added an assist, while Salit handed out a career-best four assists and scored once.
Senior midfielder Nick Hauman followed with four points on two goals and two assists, and freshman midfielder Hayden Lauer contributed three goals. Junior midfielder Sean Donaldson (two goals) and junior attacker Scott Bovard (one goal, one assist) added two points apiece.
Senior Tyler Manning played all 60 minutes in goal for the Cardinals, making 12 saves. Freshman defender Jake Vernieri and sophomore defender Garrin Dougherty both caused a pair of turnovers.
Nate Winters and Peyton Gestole eac scored three goals to lead the Shoremen on the offensive end. Defender Brian Blanche caused a game-high five turnovers.
How It Happened
Sutton scored three times in the opening quarter and once more in the second as the Cardinals built a commanding 9-2 lead in the first half. Hauman and Lauer each scored twice in the half, while Salit found the back of the net once and tallied a pair of assists. St. John Fisher outscored Washington College 5-1 in the first quarter and 4-1 in the second.
The Shoremen began the second half on a 3-1 run to cut their deficit to 10-5, but the Cardinals countered with a 3-1 run of their own over the final six minutes to get their lead back to seven goals at 13-6. Lauer, Bovard, senior midfielder Lane Edinger and sophomore attacker Luke James accounted for Fisher's scoring in the frame.
Washington College scored four unanswered goals in the final quarter, but not before Donaldson struck for two tallies in the first seven minutes of the frame to push the Cardinals' lead to a game-high nine goals, 15-6. Salit tallied his fourth assist of the game on Donaldson's second goal of the quarter, which came at the 8:08 mark.
