Kaplan, Penna To Compete In NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday

How They Got Here


Senior Brandon Kaplan (weight throw) and junior Hayden Penna (pole vault) will represent St. John Fisher in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. 

Brandon Kaplan (Sr., Weight Throw): A first-time qualifier for indoor nationals – he qualified for outdoor nationals last season – Kaplan shattered school and meet records in the weight throw with a mark of 19.16 meters to claim his second straight Empire 8 Conference Indoor championship on Feb. 28. He has recorded five throws of 18-plus meters this season. 

Hayden Penna (Jr., Pole Vault): Penna, a first-time national qualifier (indoor or outdoor), has bested his school record in the pole vault four times this season, most recently in the Nazareth Conference Tune-Up Meet in February with a mark of 5.02 meters. Penna won his third straight Empire 8 Conference Indoor pole vault title on Feb. 27 and placed second in the All-Atlantic Region Indoor Track and Field Championships last Friday.

Men’s Weight Throw (Kaplan): 11 a.m. start time on Friday

Men’s Pole Vault (Penna): 4:30 p.m. start time on Friday

What's At Stake


The Cardinals have never had an All-American in the weight throw or pole vault events. The top eight finishers in each event earn first-team All-American honors, while placers in the No. 9 to No. 16 range will be second-team All-Americans.
