Mahana Applauded for Academics After Being Named All-District by COSIDA

Senior Eddie Mahana of the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's track and field team was applauded for his work in the classroom late last week as the Clay native was named Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Mahana, who is one of just 11 players from New York to be recognized, is now eligible to be named an Academic All-American. Those selections will be announced by COSIDA on June 23rd.

To be considered, a student-athlete must have reached their sophomore year and have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30.  Nominees must have also made a significant impact on their team's success on the field of play.  To date, Fisher has had 26 Academic All-America selections by COSIDA with Tony Silvanic of the football program being the most recent.

Now a four-time All-American, Mahana was recognized after having qualified for NCAAs for the third consecutive year after posting a program record time of 8.02 seconds at the Empire 8 Championship in late February to secure him the third-fastest time in the nation. The Clay native was named an All-American in the 60m hurdles for the second straight year after having finished eighth at last year's Indoor Championship.

One of the most decorated student-athletes in the program's history, Mahana helped lead Fisher to its third Empire 8 Championship on the indoor side earlier this year. An All-Region selection at the conclusion of the year, he was named All-Conference in four different events and claimed three Empire 8 individual titles in all. He is a three-time Empire 8 Track Athlete of the Year recipient, a 20-time All-Conference honoree and a National Runner-Up after having placed second in the 110m hurdles by just a thousandth of one second (.001) in 2019.
