Men's Volleyball Sweeps Hartwick, Tops Misericordia In Four Sets

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher men's volleyball team swept Hartwick (25-13, 25-19, 25-21) and beat Misericordia in four sets (25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17) on Friday night at Manning & Napier Varsity Gym. 

The Cardinals pushed their winning streak to three matches and improved to 7-5 on the season with the pair of non-conference victories. 

How It Happened (St. John Fisher vs. Hartwick)

The Cardinals pounded 10 kills on a .333 hitting percentage and aced five serves while cruising to a 25-13 victory in the opening set. Senior outside hitter Gabe La Robardiere led the way with four kills, and freshman libero/setter Bryce Nickson had a pair of service aces. Hartwick had four kills and five errors, hitting -0.50. 

St. John Fisher opened the second set on a 10-2 run and never let the Hawks pull within fewer than four points from that point on en route to a 25-19 win. Junior middle blocker Guillermo Perez led the Cardinals with four kills and hit .429 in the frame, while sophomore outside hitter Evan Hernandez added three and hit .600. 

The Cardinals had to earn the sweep in the third set, as they trailed by four early and never led by more than four until taking a 24-19 lead on a service ace from freshman outside hitter Dylan Leong. Hartwick scored back-to-back points after that to cut its deficit to three, 24-21, but the Cardinals didn't mess around any longer, securing the 25-21 win on a kill by junior middle blocker Alex Quinn, who led Fisher in the set with four total kills. Sophomore outside hitter Nathan Dreger and junior defensive specialist Nick Tartaglia had three apiece, and junior setter James Barone dished out eight assists. 

Match Notes (St. John Fisher vs. Hartwick)

  • Perez led the Cardinals with 10 points on seven kills and five total blocks, including one solo. His seven kills matched his career high. 

  • Perez finished the match with a .600 hitting percentage.

  • Quinn set a career high with six kills on an .857 hitting percentage. He also had four block assists as part of an eight-point performance. 

  • Barone led the Cardinals and set season highs in assists (13) and digs (7). 

  • Nickson and fellow freshman Giancarlo Martinez each aced two serves. 

  • The Cardinals' nine service aces marked their second-highest total in a match this season. 

How It Happened (St. John Fisher vs. Misericordia)

The Cardinals prevailed 25-20 in the first set behind five kills from freshman outside hitter Avery Kielbasinski, who finished the match with a team-high 13 kills. Junior outside hitter Connor Holmes had three kills and two total blocks, including one solo, and senior setter Aiden Calhoun amassed 11 assists. 

Fisher scored seven of the first 10 points, including the first four in a row, to build a 7-3 lead and stayed ahead until Misericordia tied the match at 18. The Cardinals scored three straight points to take a three-point lead, 21-18, but the Cougars snapped off a 3-0 run in response to pull even again. 

Fisher took control down the stretch, closing out a 25-21 victory with a 4-1 run that included two kills from La Robardiere and one from Kielbasinski. La Robardiere led the Cardinals with four kills on a .375 hitting percentage in the frame. 

The third set included 14 tied scores and four lead changes as the Cougars fended off a Fisher sweep with a 25-21 victory. Chris U'Glay pounded eight of his match-high 18 kills in the set while hitting a scorching-hot .700. He had two of those kills during a 4-0 Misericordia run that came after Fisher tied the set at 21 on a kill by senior outside hitter Casey Jackson

Fisher finished the night strong in the fourth set, ending the match with a 25-17 victory. The Cardinals separated after a back-and-forth start with a 6-0 run that gave them a commanding 18-9 lead. Kielbasinski had a pair of service aces in that stretch. 

Junior outside hitter Sonepith Keoviengsamay led the Cardinals with four kills while hitting .571 in the final frame. Kielbasinski, Perez, La Robardiere, Holmes and Calhoun had two apiece. Calhoun added 11 assists and a service ace. 

Match Notes (St. John Fisher vs. Misericordia)

  • Calhoun tallied a career-high 41 assists, slammed five kills and aced four serves. His five kills marked a season high, and his four aces matched his career high. 

  • Kielbasinski led the Cardinals with 15.5 points on 13 kills, two service aces and a block assist. 

  • The match marked Kielbasinski's second this week with 13 kills. He had 13 in a sweep of Nazareth on Wednesday night. 

  • La Robardiere slammed nine kills and tallied three total blocks, including one solo, for 11 points. 

  • Holmes also had nine kills and three total blocks (one solo) for 11 points. 

  • Freshman libero Luke Zimmerman led the Cardinals' defensive effort with nine digs. Jackson finished with eight.
