How They Got Here

St. John Fisher: The No. 1 seeded Cardinals blanked No. 8-seeded Elmira 2-0 on Saturday to advance to the Empire 8 Semifinals.

After somewhat of a slow start in the way of quality scoring chances, the Cardinals broke through in the 41st minute. Sophomore defender Brooklyn Olschewske's corner kick went straight to freshman defender Makayla Land, who headed the ball past Elmira goalkeeper Sarah Cantrell for her first collegiate goal. St. John Fisher clung to a one-goal advantage until the 76th minute, when junior forward Emily Woolingham finished a feed from freshman forward Jillyan Ewing to give the Cardinals some breathing room down the stretch.

Cardinals sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Ayers made two saves in each half and recorded her eighth shutout of the season.

The defending Empire 8 champions went 14-2 overall and 10-1 in Empire 8 play during the regular season, claiming the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament for just the third time in program history. They had won 10 straight games since a Sept. 12 loss to Allegheny and 17 consecutive games against E8 opponents since October of last season until falling 2-1 to Geneseo in the regular-season finale on Oct. 24.

Fisher ended the regular season atop the conference in goals (48), assists (36) and scoring margin (+30). The Cardinals allowed the second-fewest goals in the conference (13) and recorded seven shutouts.

Geneseo: The No. 4-seeded Knights took down No. 5-seeded Brockport 3-2 on Saturday to punch their ticket to the Empire 8 Semifinals.

Geneseo rattled off three unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 in the 19th minute. Ella Yartym (39th minute), Kate Pinto (57th minute) and Aicha Cisse (66th minute) accounted for the the Knights' tallies.

The Knights finished the regular season 9-4-3 overall with a 7-2-2 mark in Empire 8 action. They handed St. John Fisher its only E8 loss during the regular season and have won seven of their last eight games overall since a 3-1 setback to Nazareth on Sept. 30.

With A Win…

The Cardinals would…. set a program record for wins in a season (16)… advance to the Empire 8 Championship for the second year in a row and fourth time overall… record their fifth consecutive win in the Empire 8 tournament.

Players To Watch

#0 Isabella Ayers (So., GK) – Ayers, who owns a 20-3-0 career record, has played every minute (17 full games, 153 minutes) for the Cardinals this season. She has made 56 saves and allowed just 13 goals. Ayers is tied for the conference lead with eight shutouts and ranks second in the E8 with a 0.76 goals against average. Her eight shutouts are the second most by a Cardinal goalkeeper in a season.

#9 Francesca Logrippo (Sr., M) – Logrippo leads the Cardinals and is tied for first in the Empire 8 with seven assists. The 2025 Empire 8 Tournament MVP has 12 assists over the last two seasons combined.

#10 Emily Woolingham (Jr., F) – One of the top offensive players in all of NCAA Division III, Woolingham leads the Empire 8 with 17 goals and 40 total points. She ranks sixth and eighth nationally in goals and points, respectively. Woolingham, who has scored in seven consecutive games and boasts four multi-goal performances this year, has recorded at least a point in all but two of the Cardinals' 17 contests. With her goal against Elmira on Saturday, she became the first Fisher player to reach 40 points in a season since Marianne Laurine in 1981 and moved into a tie with Laurine (1981) and Mary Cooper (1979) on the Cardinals' single-season goals list.

#11 Olivia Kalil (Jr., F) – Kalil has 20 total points – the second most on the team – on eight goals and four assists. In September, she scored three times against SUNY Poly and twice against Hartwick to become the first Fisher player since at least 2000 to score five goals over a two-game span. Her performance against Hartwick made her the 11th Cardinal since 2000 to record a three-goal game.

Fisher vs. Geneseo History

Series Snapshot: Wednesday's contest will mark the 15th meeting between St. John Fisher and Geneseo since 2002. The Cardinals are 3-8-3 against the Knights since then.

Postseason Meetings: Wednesday's game will mark the second postseason matchup between the teams. The Cardinals fell 2-0 to the Knights in the 2024 Empire 8 Semifinals at SUNY Geneseo's College Stadium.

Abby Foster scored both Geneseo goals, first at the 46:39 mark on an assist from Juliette Frischmann. She tallied her second goal of the game at the 63:16 mark on assists from Lindsey Matthews and Lindsey Clar.

Cardinals senior forward Riley Grimm nearly tied the game between those goals, as she sent a rocket off the crossbar in the 58th minute.

St. John Fisher junior goalkeeper Avery Byrnes made two saves.

Last Meeting: Geneseo recorded a 2-1 victory over St. John Fisher on Oct. 24. It was the Cardinals' only conference loss during the regular season, and it snapped their 17-game winning streak against E8 foes (including regular season and postseason games since last October).

Geneseo earned a penalty kick in the 17th minute, and Emily McGee converted to give the Knights a 1-0 lead they carried into halftime.

The Cardinals had two of their best offensive chances of the day in the 75th minute. With Geneseo goalkeeper Natalie Budgar well out of position, juniors Olivia Kalil and Emily Woolingham had their shot attempts blocked. Budgar stopped Kalil's attempt, and the rebound went straight to Woolingham, whose shot was blocked by a pair of Geneseo defenders covering the goal for Budgar.

The Knights doubled their advantage in the 78th minute, when Madelyn Murphy found herself in the right place at the right time. A pass bounced off a St. John Fisher defender in front of the net, and Murphy quickly fired a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Ayers.

Junior Abby Dorunda nearly got the Cardinals on the board less than a minute later, drilling a shot off the crossbar from about 25 yards away. Fisher finally broke through in the 88th minute, as Woolingham finished a rebound after Budgar turned away Logrippo's penalty kick attempt.

Geneseo did not allow the Cardinals to generate another chance, playing keepaway in the final minutes to secure the victory.

Last Win: St. John Fisher most recently beat Geneseo last September.

After a scoreless first half, defender Carolyn Rowe broke through for the Cardinals in the 58th minute, finding the back of the net after taking a feed from midfielder Francesca Logrippo. It was the game's lone goal.

Goalkeeper Avery Byrnes made five saves and earned credit for the shutout. She made four of those stops in the second half.
