ONEONTA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher men's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort and strong defensive play to secure a 76-65 Empire 8 Conference road victory over Hartwick College on Friday night inside Lambros Arena.
The Cardinals improved to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in Empire 8 action, while the Hawks dropped to 7-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Sophomore Maximus Michalski led Fisher with 17 points and nine rebounds, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Andrew Violante and sophomore Alex Hayes each added 15 points, with Hayes going a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.
Violante also contributed four rebounds and three assists, while Hayes finished with five rebounds and three assists of his own. Junior Max Schneider chipped in seven points, and Fisher received key bench contributions from Jack Janes and Giovanni Schillaci, who scored five points apiece.
How It Happened
The Cardinals came out aggressive on both ends of the floor building an early double-digit lead behind efficient shooting and defensive pressure. Fisher led by as many as 11 in the opening half and carried a 42-36 advantage into the break.
Hartwick made several attempts to close the gap in the second half, cutting the deficit to four on multiple occasions, but the Cardinals responded each time with timely baskets and strong execution. Fisher leaned on Michalski and Violante during key stretches, while Hayes delivered a late offensive rebound and put-back that pushed the lead back to eight with just over two minutes remaining.
The Cardinals sealed the victory at the free-throw line, finishing 21-of-26 from the stripe, including several makes in the final minute to preserve the road win.
