ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 3 RIT Tigers scored five goals in the fourth quarter to rally past the St. John Fisher men's lacrosse team in the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
The Cardinals, who'd won 12 consecutive games entering the contest, finished the season 16-5 overall. They tied the program's second-best mark for wins in a season.
RIT, which reached the national championship game last year and won it in 2021 and 2022, will host SUNY Cortland in the quarterfinals next Saturday.
How It Happened
-
The Cardinals, who lost 19-4 to the Tigers on their home turf back on March 19, hung with their crosstown counterpart from start to finish, never trailing by more than four.
-
With the Cardinals a man down early in the first quarter, junior goalkeeper Tyler Manning scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game at one. He sprinted about 45 yards with the ball before planting near midfield and launching his shot, which zipped through the air and into a bewilderingly empty RIT net.
-
RIT appeared to be pulling away midway through the third quarter, holding a 12-8 lead with about six minutes left, but the Cardinals' offense suddenly caught a heater. Freshman JP Revitte and seniors Reed Currie, Brady Mason and Colin Blakeslee scored in the final five minutes of the third to tie the game at 12, putting RIT on the ropes entering the final 15 minutes.
-
Showing its championship mettle, RIT eliminated the drama early in the fourth quarter, rattling off four unanswered goals to take a 16-12 lead.
-
Fisher senior Ethan Kesselring ended the run with a goal at the 7:06 mark, but the Tigers pushed their lead back to four less than two minutes later on Chase Bruno's fourth goal of the contest.
Game Notes
-
Mason, Kesselring, Revitte, sophomore Sean Donaldson and fifth-year senior Timmy Salit scored two goals apiece.
-
With two assists, Salit reached 50 on the season and passed Nick Miller for the program's single-season record. He finished his career with 121 assists, the second most in program history.
-
Mason finished his career fourth in Fisher history with 138 career goals and fifth in points with 206.
-
Manning made 15 saves in the contest.
