PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher baseball team completed a three-game weekend sweep of Alfred University on Saturday with a 19-8 victory in eight innings at Dugan Yard.
With the victory, the Cardinals extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 17-13 overall and 12-4 in Empire 8 play.
After the game concluded, the Cardinals honored their seniors and graduate students. That group included Dominic Guccia, Christian O'Brien, Patrick McGuire, Nathaniel Kilburn, Bryce Collis, Andrew Roman, Tanner Frank, Jimmy McCardle, Ethan Perry, Mario Cubello, Joshua Ferris and Anthony Lang.
St. John Fisher 19, Alfred 8
After a clean top half of the first inning, the Cardinals scored two runs manufactured from aggressive base running and capitlizing on misplays from the Alfred defense. Jackson Frey and Mario Cubello both crossed the plate in the inning.
The lead was extended to 6-0 in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Brendan Bucello hit a two-run home run, and Ethan Perry knocked in a run with an RBI single. Frey had a sac fly RBI in the fourth inning.
In the top half of the fifth inning, Alfred stormed back to tie the game at six. Benjamin Weimer hit a grand slam to straightaway center field in the inning.
Jack Griffin's home run in the bottom half of the inning gave the Cardinals the lead, before Alfred tied it back up at 7-7. A Mario Cubello two-run homer in the sixth put the Cardinals back ahead 9-7.
A ten-run inning in the eighth from St. John Fisher ended the game in a mercy rule victory. The Cardinals sent eleven hitters to the plate in the inning. Jackson Frey hit a solo homer and a three-run RBI double. Jack Griffin hit a two-RBI single, and Andrew Roman knocked in one with a base hit.
Cubello put the game on ice with a two-run homer, his second of the game.
Sean Cleary started the game on the mound for Fisher. He threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and tallying four strikeouts.
Tanner Frank earned the victory, with 2.1 innings of strong relief.
Anthony Lang threw one inning of relief and struck out each of the three batters he faced.
