PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher softball team split its non-conference doubleheader against RIT on Monday afternoon at the SJF Softball Complex.
The Cardinals (17-10 overall, 9-1 Empire 8) had their seven-game winning streak snapped with a 5-2 loss in the first game. They rebounded in the second game with an 8-0, five-inning victory.
Game 1: St. John Fisher 2, RIT 5
RIT collected 11 hits and took advantage of some lackluster Fisher defense (four errors) in the opening game of the twin bill.
Maddy Cook smacked a solo home run to straightaway center to put RIT ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning. The Tigers added two more runs in the third when Emma Merkley attempted to drop down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error that allowed Anna Cavotta to score from first base.
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when senior catcher Mari Spitz roped a double to left center that scored sophomore Emily McManus from first base.
Senior Katie Mannis brought Fisher within a run, 3-2, with a solo home run to center field in the top of the fifth. The Cardinals had the tying run in scoring position with one out later in the inning, but back-to-back pop-outs by senior Maddie Donlin and sophomore Taylor Shackleton stranded senior Cassidy Evanetski on base.
RIT added a run in the sixth and another in the seventh, an inning in which Fisher committed two errors, to secure the victory.
Majot pitched all seven innings, striking out five batters and walking none. She allowed seven hits.
Senior Ainsley Evanetski allowed five runs (three earned) on 11 hits and two walks. She struck out eight batters to reach 400 for her career.
Game 2: St. John Fisher 8, RIT 0
Senior Cassidy Ormond allowed one hit, issued one walk and struck out three batters in a five-inning shutout victory over RIT in the second game.
After junior Madi Rose reached on a throwing error and Donlin singled to center to start the bottom of the first, Shackleton laced a single to right field to give Fisher a 1-0 lead.
Mannis crushed her second home run of the day in the second inning, and McManus drilled her Empire 8-leading 11th long ball of the season in the fourth. A Donlin double that plated Rose and an RIT throwing error that allowed McManus to score all the way from first extended the Cardinals' lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning.
Shackleton, who drove in a career-high four runs, ended the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out, three-run double down the right field line.
