CLINTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women's basketball team dropped to 0–3 on the season with a 61–57 loss to Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon at the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Fisher received a strong performance from freshman guard Natalie Mai, who led the Cardinals with 15 points and made four three-pointers. Senior guard Presleigh Brunner added 13 points and six rebounds.
How It Happened
Salve Regina opened the game on a run and led 21–14 lead after the first quarter behind efficient mid-range scoring and an 11-for-13 start at the free-throw line. Fisher responded early in the second quarter with a three from senior guard Hannah Ferguson and a free throw from freshman forward Payton O'Dell to narrow the gap, but turnovers and second-chance buckets by the Seahawks pushed the halftime margin to 35–24.
The Cardinals put together their strongest stretch in the third quarter, outscoring Salve Regina 19–13. Brunner connected from long range, and Mai hit consecutive threes to pull Fisher within five.
Fisher stayed within striking distance throughout the final period, with baskets from Brunner, Ferguson and O'Dell keeping the deficit manageable. However, Salve Regina answered each push with timely interior scoring and free throws. Despite closing the gap to two possessions in the final minute, the Cardinals could not break through.
