Moravec Twins Lead Fisher Past Elmira

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Twin sisters Katie and Kelly Moravec combined to score 40 points as the St. John Fisher University women's basketball team won its eighth straight game on Saturday afternoon, 79-63 over Elmira College. 

The Cardinals improved to 13-4 overall and remained unbeaten (8-0) in the Empire 8, while the soaring Eagles dropped to 7-10 overall and 1-7 in the conference. Fisher has won 21 straight games against Elmira, a streak that began in January 2014. 

Katie Moravec led the Cardinals with 23 points while shooting 6 of 12 overall (1-1 from three) and 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. Kelly Moravec had 17 points and shot 5 of 10 overall and 7 of 10 from the line. 

Sidney Tomasso recorded another double-double – her sixth of the season – with 17 points and 10 rebounds. 

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals took command early, jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the first six minutes of the contest. They had a 24-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

  • Katie Moravec scored 17 of her points in the first half, which the Cardinals finished with a 27-point lead, 46-19. 

  • The Cardinals pushed their lead to a game-high 33 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter. 

  • Kelly Moravec scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half. 

Game Notes

  • Tomasso has posted double-doubles in back-to-back games. She now has 10 in her collegiate career. 

  • The Cardinals had a significant edge at the free-throw line, as they made 27 of 30 (90%) attempts to Elmira's 11 of 15. 

  • The Cardinals tied their season high with 27 made free throws. 

  • The Cardinals scored 28 points off 16 Elmira turnovers. 

  • Katie Moravec set a career-high with 10 free throws made. 

  • Kelly Moravec tied her career high with 17 points. She also scored that many in a victory over Russell Sage last weekend. 

  • Kelly Moravec also set a career-high in free throws made (7). 

  • Junior guard Presleigh Brunner added 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting.
