Women's Soccer Deals Brockport First Loss Of The Season In Crucial Empire 8 Contest

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team dealt SUNY Brockport its first loss of the season for its fifth consecutive victory at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the 2-0 victory, the Cardinals (8-3-1, 6-1 Empire 8) moved into a tie for first place with Brockport (10-1-1, 6-1 Empire 8) in the league standings. The Golden Eagles hadn't lost a regular-season game since Sept. 27 of last year.

The Cardinals have outscored their opponents 16-2 during their five-game win streak, which began on Sept. 25 against Utica. Three of those victories have been shutouts.

"It was an intense game from start to finish, a full-team effort," Fisher head coach Molly Romano said. "We worked hard to score in the first and second half, and our defensive line battled throughout the game to earn the shutout. We work hard to improve each week and are ready to get back to work to prepare for next week's games."

The Cardinals opened the scoring at the end of the first half, as freshman forward Emily Woolingham found the back of the net unassisted for her third goal of the season. She has scored twice in the Cardinals' last four games.

Senior midfielder Siobhan McMakin bolstered Fisher's lead about eight minutes into the second half, scoring her first goal of the season on an assist from senior forward Emma Spelman. One of the Empire 8's top offensive players, Spelman currently ranks second in the league in assists (7) and fourth in total points (17). She has seven points in the Cardinals' last four games.

St. John Fisher goalkeeper Avery Byrnes made five saves and posted her second consecutive shutout. The junior has 12 collegiate clean sheets.

The victory marked Fisher's first over Brockport since 2018 and fourth since 2005.

Up Next
