PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team were at home on Wednesday for their home opener and hosted SUNY Brockport. The game was chippy and intense, but the Golden Eagles got the best of the Cardinals as Fisher fall 3-2. Their record now sits at 0-3.
The game was delayed 30 minutes due to lightening in the area, but once it kicked off, the two teams go after it. Brockport let off four shots in the opening 20 minutes but the Cardinal defense was able to keep the score at 0-0, including a save by
Christian Burkhart.
The Golden Eagles put two goals into the back of the net in under two minutes. The first came at the 40:10 mark with a corner kick deflecting in front of a Brockport player who slotted it into the bottom left. A minute later, a foul inside the box led to a penalty kick that was converted by the Golden eagles and put Fisher behind 2-0 going into the break.
The Cardinals made sure to get one back quickly in the second half.
Jacob McGinnis let the ball drop to his feet after a long free-kick and used the traffic to get a ball by the keeper. In the 85th minute,
Joey Avallone took a chance from outside of the box and it got through the diving goalie and cut the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert some late corner kicks and fell to Brockport.
The Cardinals head back on the road on Saturday, Sept. 9. They travel to Oswego State for a 2 p.m. kick off.
