PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University football team hosted SUNY Brockport for Courage Bowl XVIII on Saturday. After a competitive matchup, the Golden Eagles pulled away late to take the 35-18 win.
The Courage Bowl directly benefits Camp Good Days, which is a not-for-profit organization that provides thousands of children with cancer the opportunity to come together in a residential camping experience to be with the only ones who could truly understand what they were going through – other children with cancer.
For the game, Camp Good Days selects honorary coaches and cheerleaders for both teams. These are Camp Good Days campers who have been diagnosed with cancer and would normally not be allowed to participate in a real football game. The Camp Good Days Courage Bowl gives these campers that opportunity. At the conclusion of the Courage Bowl, the Teddi Trophy, named in memory of Teddi Mervis, Gary Mervis' daughter and the inspiration behind Camp Good Days, will be presented, which will later be inscribed with the date of the game, final score of the game, names of the honorary coaches/cheerleaders and the names of one player from each team who displays exceptional leadership and sportsmanship.
Brockport got on the board first with a touchdown in their second drive of the evening. Fisher responded with a touchdown of their own, but a missed extra point kept the score at 7-6.
Aaron Chase capped off an 8 play 70 yard drive with a five yard touchdown toss to
Declan Faery. The Cardinals were unable to score again in the first half, and trailed 21-6 going into the break.
In the third quarter, Fisher took a long 13 play, 62 yard drive to the end zone, thanks to another Chase touchdown, but this time it was using his legs. The two-point conversion failed and the team trailed 21-12, going into the final quarter. Brockport scored two touchdowns to ice the game and the Cardinals fell by a finals core of 35-18.
Chase finished the day going 14-for-27 with one touchdown and two interceptions. On the ground he ran it 12 times for 83 yards and two more touchdowns. Nolan was effective in the backfield, going 95 yards on 29 attempts. Curtis was the leading receiver with seven receptions for 83 yards.
Fisher will be on a bye week next weekend, before going back on the road for a 2:30 p.m. contest at Hartwick College on Saturday, Oct. 14.
