Cardinals Comeback in Regional Games To Advance to Championship

BALTIMORE, MD – The St. John Fisher University baseball team is at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, MD, for day two of the NCAA Regionals. The Cardinal's second game saw Fisher take on Penn State Altoona. A ninth inning grand slam by Brian Norsen pushed the Cardinals to a seven run inning, coming back and winning 10-4. In their third game, a six-run eighth inning, plus a walk-off single, helped push the Cardinals to a 10-9 victory. After today's results, Fisher moves to an overall record of 32-13.

Game Three Vs. Penn State Altoona: Win, 10-4
Fisher had a tough start to the game, allowing three runs in the first. Picking up their first runs in the top of the fourth, Norsen homered to left field, bringing home James Murphy. Later in the inning, Lavery homered to right field, the Cardinals trailing 3-4. With neither team seeing any runs, Ethan Perry stepped up to the plate in the top of the ninth, singling up the middle and bringing home Jake Crantz, tying up the game. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Norsen hit a grand slam to left field. Two batters later, Ben Lavery hit the Cardinal's fourth homer of the game to left field, bringing home Dom Guccia. After nine innings, Fisher knocked out Penn State Altoona, winning 10-4.

Starting for the Cardinals, Connor McHugh pitched the first 1.2 innings. McHugh faced 14 batters, striking out one batter, walking one, and allowing four hits and four runs. Coming in next, Russell Dunlap pitched 6.1 innings. Dunlap faced 23 batters, striking out two, allowing one walk, and only giving up two hits. After today's result, Dunlap moves to an overall record of 5-1. Closing the game out, Christian Maloney pitched the final inning. Maloney faced three batters, striking out one and allowing no hits or runs.

Game Five Vs. # 20 Randolph-Macon: Win, 10-9
With neither team scoring for two innings, Nick Lemire singled through the left side in the third, Jack Migliore scoring, Fisher taking the lead, 1-0. A few innings later, in the bottom of the sixth, Lemire homered to left field, the Cardinals trailing 2-3. The eighth inning saw Fisher make a six-run push, started by Murphy scoring from Guccia reaching on a fielder's choice. Immediately after, Lavery homered to left field, driving Guccia home. Two batters later, Perry doubled to right center, with Crantz scoring. Later, Campanelli singled to right center, Perry scoring. The final run of the inning came from Murphy getting walked, Migliore scoring, the Cardinals trailing 8-9. Coming back from a rain delay, the Cardinals loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, Perry singled down the right field line, bringing home the tying run of Joe Ruggiero and the winning run in Guccia. After nine innings, the Cardinals won 10-9.

Starting for the Cardinals, Ben Huckans pitched the first 5.2 innings, facing 24 batters, striking out four, and allowing seven hits and three runs. Between the next three innings, four pitchers faced six at-bats, allowing three hits and six runs. Anthony Lang came in for the final 1.1 innings, facing seven batters, striking out three, and only allowing two hits.

Up next, Fisher take on #1 Johns Hopkins University in a Regional championship game. The Cardinals will have to defeat the Blue Jays twice, with the Blue Jays only needing one win. The two teams will face at Johns Hopkins University on May 21, in Baltimore, MD, with the first pitch set for 11 a.m.
