PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against Utica University on Saturday afternoon for an Empire 8 match up. After dominating from start to finish, the Cardinals won by an 18-4 final score. Fisher now holds a 3-8 overall record and are 3-0 in conference play. The Pioneers fall to 5-8 on the season and are 1-2 in conference play.
To start to game off, Timmy Salit picks up a ground ball and takes it to cage himself to get the early tally for Fisher. At the 12-minute mark, Joe Urlacher makes a good defensive play, causing a Pioneer turnover and picking up the loose ball, Cardinals clear the ball successfully. On the other end, Samuel Miller finds Jordan Leuze for his first of the day, pushing the Fisher lead to 2-0. With 8:27 to go in the first, Kemmis secures a ground ball and gets the Cardinals another offensive opportunity. Brady Mason asks for the ball up top and Lane Edinger finds him for the tally, Fisher up 3-0. The Pioneers get on the board with 3:15 left in the first to make it 4-1. Edinger finishes out the first quarter scoring for Fisher, they head into the second quarter leading 5-2.
The Cardinals get two quick back to back goals early, Griffin Dautrich and Matt Slowinski both get on the board, 7-2 Cardinals up. The Pioneers answer back making the score 7-3 with 12 minutes until halftime. Brett Seaman picks up an offensive rebound and puts it away. 40 seconds later, Colin Blakeslee gets a tally, assisted by Salit to make it 9-3. Terrence Cleary with a take away and ground ball on the defensive end bring it down the field. Aiden Wheeler gets his first goal of the season, assisted by Cleary. With 1:29 to go until half, Mason puts one away and 40 seconds later gets another. The Cardinals lead 12-3 at half.
Mason gets his fourth of the day to start out the second half. A Cardinals defensive stop leads to Salit finding Seaman for another goal on the offensive end, Cardinals leads 14-3. Another solid defensive play by Urlacher leads to an offensive goal by Dan Delaney, to bring Fisher up by 12 heading into the fourth. Jack Gullo with a big save on the defensive end gives Seaman the opportunity to put it away for a hat trick and a 16-3 score. 1:58 left in regulation, as the Cardinals look for a final scoring opportunity, Quinn Peters finds a cutting Kyler Ringgold for his first of the day. As time ran out, Fisher finished on top by an 18-4 final score.
Mason leading on the offensive end with four goals and one assists, adding two ground balls and one caused turnover. Salit with two goals, two assists, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Urlacher finished the day with four ground balls and three caused turnovers on the defensive end. The faceoff unit went 20-for-26 on the day for a .77 face-off win percentage.
Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to and compete against Alfred University on Wednesday, April 12. The Empire 8 matchup is set for 4pm.
