PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University baseball team hosted the final two games of a three games series against Keuka College. In game one, both teams got off to a slow start, with the only run of the game coming in the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals winning 1-0. In game two,
James Murphy had two home runs and six RBIs to help propel the Cardinals to a 15-1 victory. After today's results, Fisher moves to an overall record of 10-10 on the year and 6-0 in Empire 8 play.
Game One: Win, 1-0
The first game started with both teams failing to collect a hit in the first inning.
Ben Lavery collected the first hit, singling to left center in the bottom of the second. Fisher's next hit came in the bottom of the fourth, with
Luke Duffy singling to right field. In the fifth inning, Fisher picked up their first run of the game with
Nick Lemire grounding out to second, bringing home
Jack Migliore, who doubled earlier in the inning, making the score 1-0. The Cardinal's final hit came in the sixth inning, with Lavery doubling down the left field line. The game ended with Fisher winning 1-0 after seven.
Starting for the Cardinals,
Patrick McGuire pitched 6.0 innings to earn the win. McGuire struck out two batters, only allowed two hits, and gave up no runs after facing 23 batters.
Benjamin Huckans pitched Fisher's final inning, facing four batters, striking out two, and only giving up one hit to record the save.
Game Two: Win, 15-1
The Cardinals came out aggressive in the second game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second.
Brian Norsen reached first on an error, allowing
Noah Campanelli to score. Immediately after,
Dominic Guccia singled through the right side, driving in
Nick Lemire. Following that, Lavery reached first on an error, with Norsen scoring, the score 3-0. In the bottom of the third,
James Murphy started out a high-scoring inning with a homerun to right center, bringing home Lemire. Later in the inning, Lavery singled, with Guccia and Norsen scoring on errors. A few batters later,
Andrew Roman lined into a double play, but Lavery scored to push the score to 8-1. Murphy continues his slugging in the fourth inning, hitting a homer to right center, bringing home Lemire and Campanelli.
Carrying their momentum into the fifth, Lemire triple to outfield, bringing home two runners. Immediately after, Murphy singled to the pitcher, with Lemire scoring. Later in the inning, Guccia doubled to right field, bringing home Murphy. The game ended after the top of the seventh, Fisher winning 15-1.
Russell Dunlap started for the Cardinals and pitched 5.0 innings, facing 20 batters and striking out three on his way to the win.
Bryce Collis pitched the final 2.0 innings for the Cardinals, facing 10 batters, striking out six, and giving up no runs.
Next up, the Cardinals continue their home stand as they host SUNY Brockport at Dugan Yard. The game will take place on Tuesday, Apr. 4, with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
