Softball Splits Against Ithaca Bombers

ITHACA, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's softball team (10-6) split a doubleheader against the Ithaca Bombers (9-4-1) Saturday afternoon. After dropping the first contest, the Cardinals were able to bounce back in the second game to turn the tide and split the twin bill.

Bombers 8, Cardinals 0

After a walk to leadoff hitter Madi Rose, the Bombers struck out the side to recover. In the bottom half, the Bombers used a leadoff double to support their first run of the game, which came on a sacrifice fly. The Cardinals first eight outs were recorded on strikeouts, but the streak came to a close when Amalia DeMartino grounded out to third in the top of the third.

Fisher were not be able to muster offense in the loss, dropping 8-0 in the five inning contest.

With the loss, Jess Patterson moves to 4-3 on the season. Patterson went 4.0 innings, surrendering six hits and eight runs (six earned) to go along with five walks, five strikeouts, and two hits batsmen.

Cardinals 2, Bombers 0

Looking to recover from the first game, Ainsley Evanteski continued to build upon her strong season to help push the Cardinals past the bombers in the second game.

After a quiet start to the game, the Cardinals were able to break through in the top of the fourth. Allie Klonowski drilled a home run to left center to get the Cardinals on the board, her first this season. Two batters later, DeMartino drew the walk and C. Evanteski was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with two outs. Kelly Cournoyer struck out, but the ball escaped the catcher, allowing DeMartino to score from second.

The Bombers threatened in the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on second and just one out, but A. Evanteski held off the Bombers after striking out the next two batters to end the frame.

The Cardinals were held to two hits in the second game again, but the homerun and single would be enough to support two runs in the win.

A. Evanetski moves to 3-3 on the season after scattering six hits and four walks across her complete game (7.0 innings), as the sophomore struck out eight.

The Cardinals will return to action when they head to Cortland for a doubleheader against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons on Tuesday, with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m., before their home opener, another doubleheader, on Wednesday against the Buffalo State Bengals.
