PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University football team were at home on Saturday to take on no. 17 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland. Despite a competitive start to the game, the Cardinals were unable to get the offense moving consistently and fell by a final score of 42-14. Fisher now hold a 4-3 record and are 1-2 in conference play.
The game began with Cortland going down the field to score their first touchdown of the game, but the Cardinals were able to answer the very next drive thanks to the ground game.
Peyton Nolan took the ball 44 yards for a touchdown and after a
Kyle Farewell extra point, the score was even at 7-7. Later in the quarter,
Kyle Vachon managed to force a ball loose that the team recovered, but the Cardinals were unable to take advantage of the mistake as they turned the ball over a few plays later. In the second quarter, Fisher drove to the Cortland 1-yard line, but a trick-play went wrong as a pass by Nolan was intercepted in the end-zone. Fisher trailed 28-7 at the half.
The Cardinals offense was unable to put things together until the fourth quarter when they scored their second touchdown of the day.
Aaron Chase used a combination of his legs and arm to get the team down the field before he found
Nate McGoldrick for a four-yard touchdown pass. It was not enough however as the team fell 42-14.
Chase went 21-for-26 for 197 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Nolan recorded 84 yards on 14 carries including the touchdown. McGoldrick was the favorite target, hauling in seven receptions for 101 yards. Defensively,
DeAndre Green was all over the field with 13 total tackles, including eight solo.
Joe Miscia added 11 total tackles of his own with six being solo.
Up next for the Cardinals is the final home game of the season and senior day. Alfred University will come to town for a 12 p.m. kickoff, but Fisher will honor their seniors pre-game.
