PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team finally played their home opener and looked impressive in front of the fans on Friday night. They began the evening with a victory over Lasell University, 3-1, and then ended the night by sweeping Penn State Behrend in three straight sets. With the two wins, Fisher move to 4-3 on the season, while the Lasers fall to 5-6 and the Lions drop to 4-6.
Fisher 3 – Lasers 1
The two teams appeared to be even early in the first set, with neither squad taking control. The Lasers then went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 17-13 and forced a Fisher time out. The Cardinals stabilized and climbed back to within two, but were unable to complete the come back and dropped set one, 25-21. After the break, whatever game plan head coach
Kelly Greapentrog administered, it went into effect. The Cardinals jumped ahead 9-2 in the second set and never lost the lead. The Lasers attempted to climb back into the game, getting within three points, but Fisher ended the frame on a 12-3 run.
The two units once again battled in the third set, with both teams using runs of at least five points to make a difference. Lasell had the first long run of points and went ahead 11-9, but the Cardinals answered right away with a run of six consecutive points to reclaim the lead 15-11. After going back and forth, the Lasers tied the score at 18-18, but Fisher used a 7-1 run to take the set 25-19. The fourth set was once again a story of the Cardinal dominance. They jumped ahead 6-2 and then used a 7-1 run to go in front 15-6. Despite Lasell's best effort, Fisher was able to claim the frame 25-13 and the match 3-1.
Kiana Walker and
Lindsey DeBonis were the leaders in kills in this match with 11 and 10 respectively.
Brooke Segars and
Delayne Young each recorded six or more aces and
Katie Leaty tallied 25 assists.
Fisher 3 – Lions 0
The match against Penn State Behrend was a story of scoring runs. The Cardinals jumped in front 9-1 to begin the first set, but the Lions answered back to cut their deficit to 13-10. Fisher reclaimed momentum and pushed ahead 21-13 and proceeded to trade points with the opposition until they were victorious 25-17. The second set had similar stretches, beginning with Fisher going ahead 3-0, before falling behind 4-3 and then later scoring seven consecutive points to jump in front 13-6. After the two units went back in forth for the middle part of the set, the Cardinals turned it on and ended the frame on a 7-0 run to win 25-15.
The final set, did not begin with Fisher playing their best volleyball, as they fell behind 11-5. However, two kills by Young and two aces by Leaty fueled a 7-0 run that helped them reclaim the advantage. The teams proceeded to trade points until the score was 18-18 and that's when Fisher began the final run. Young and
Kiera Hartpence were in the middle of a 7-0 run that gave the team the set and the match.
Fisher is back in action Saturday, Sept. 17 as they host the University of Mount Union and SUNY Cortland for another tri-match. The Cardinals will be in action at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
