Baseball Extends Season After Rallying in NCAA Regional to Eliminate Bridgewater

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Alec Teska pitched seven strong innings and Ryan O'Mara earned his first save of season as the St. John Fisher College baseball team eliminated Bridgewater State, 5-4, on Saturday morning on the second day of the NCAA Regional Championship at Cortland's Wallace Field.  With the win, Fisher (31-15) will advance to face either No. 8 Cortland or No. 19 Endicott College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in another elimination bout.

Teska moved to 7-3 on the year after allowing just two runs on six hits overall as the senior finished with one strikeout before giving way to O'Mara who tossed the final two frames and surrendered two runs on three hits.

The Cardinals struck first in the top of the third after manufacturing a run when Noah Campanelli worked a walk before moving into scoring position with his 23rd stolen base of the year.  After taking third base on a flyout to right, Campanelli was pushed home when Bridgewater State misplayed a ball to extend the inning and make it 1-0.

Holding a one-run edge, Fisher gave two runs back in the home half of the third, but Bridgewater was unable to maintain its lead as the Cardinals roared back in the top of the fourth and sent 10 hitters to the dish en route to a four-run inning and a 5-2 advantage.  Luke Duffy got the rally started with a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch.  With a runner on and no outs, James Murphy collected an RBI with a single through the left side before Jimmy McCardle followed suit with a base knock of his own.  As the inning continued, Campanelli gave Fisher some breathing room with a two-run single that split the outfielders. Two batters later, the middle infielder came around to score when Michael Beimel reached on another error before the Bears could retire the side.

After trading zeroes over the next three innings, Fisher made a change on the mound and Bridgewater took advantage after scoring two runs on two hits and an error to pull to within one, 5-4, heading to the top of the ninth.

With three outs left in play, the Bears had the tying run in scoring position after a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, but O'Mara settled in and struck out the next hitter before closing out the game with a flyout to foul territory to extend the Cardinals' season.

In all, Fisher accounted for six hits with Campanelli going 1-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, a pair of RBI and a stolen base.  Murphy had one hit over four at-bats and drove in a run while Ben Lavery, Beimel, Duffy and McCardle rounded out the offense for the Cardinals.
