PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team picked up its second Empire 8 victory after defeating Nazareth College, 10-7, Saturday afternoon inside Growney Stadium. With the win, Fisher, which is ranked 24th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll, improves to 3-6 overall, and 2-0 in the Empire 8, while the Golden Flyers drop to 3-7 on the season, and 1-1 in conference play.
After seven minutes of scoreless action to open the quarter, Nazareth forced a turnover and beat the Cardinals defense to score the first goal of the game.
The Cardinals would answer following a forced turnover from
Hannah King, as
Mary Fiorentino found the back of the net off an assist from
Kathleen Salanger.
Just 30 seconds later, a successful draw control from
Alexandra Strollo, allowed
Bianca Giacona to maneuver her way through the Golden Flyers defense and score the team's second goal.
The Cardinals would close the first quarter with another goal, this time Salanger cut the net and scored on an assist from
Sydney Carpenter, giving the home team a 3-1 edge.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth battle, as both teams scored three goals apiece to send the game into halftime with the Cardinals leading 6-4.
Leading by two, Fisher looked to extend its lead after a forced turnover allowed head coach
Linda Michele to call timeout and draw up a play. The timeout allowed the Cardinals to look to sophomore
Cara Landry as Giacona zipped her a pass for a goal.
Nazareth would not be fazed as they scored two goals in 40 seconds to cut the Cardinal lead to one.
Landry would put the team on her back, as she would score two more in the quarter and complete the hat trick, giving Fisher a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth.
With 15 minutes left to play, freshman Fiorentino scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Giacona to give Fisher a comfortable 10-6 lead.
The Cardinals defense locked down in the fourth quarter, allowing just one goal to close out the match 10-7, and give Fisher its second Empire 8 victory.
Landry led the way with three goals, followed by Fiorentino and Salanger with two goals each. With help from her defense, goalie
Lilly Goodsell earned the win while allowing only seven goals with three assists.
As a team, the Cardinals forced 17 turnovers, earned 20 ground balls, and won 15 draw controls.
The team ranked 24th in the nation will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. on Friday as they will travel to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore College
