PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Nick Lemire hit a walk-off double on Wednesday afternoon to lift the St. John Fisher College baseball team to an 8-6 win over nationally-ranked Oswego State in a non-conference tilt at Dugan Yard. With the win, Fisher, which has now posted a victory in each of its last five outings, improved to 12-9 while the Lakers, who are ranked 16th in the latest D3baseball.com poll, slipped to 13-5.
After holding Oswego scoreless over the first two innings, Fisher put up five runs on four hits in bottom of the second. Lemire led off the frame with a double to left and moved up a bag when
Ben Lavery singled through the right side. With two on and no outs,
Ethan Perry gave Fisher a 1-0 lead with a single the opposite way before
James Murphy drew a walk to load the bases. With one run already in and the bases chucked,
Luke Duffy and
Patrick Kravitz both worked a walk to make it 3-0 before
Michael Beimel stepped in and ripped a two-out, two-run single to right to stake the home team to a five-run cushion.
As the game wore on, Oswego plated five runs in the next two innings to tie the game before plating a run in the top of the sixth to forge ahead, 6-5.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the eighth, Fisher knotted things up after Murphy blasted a solo shot that cleared the left field fence and made it 8-8.
After working around a two-out double in the top of the ninth, Fisher came to bat in the home half of the frame as Beimel reached base after drawing a walk.
Evan Bowers entered the game as a pinch runner and promptly moved into scoring position following a wild pitch. With a runner at second and still no outs, Lemire split the outfielders and drove in Bowers to lift the Cardinals to a 7-6 win.
Fisher used six pitchers in the win beginning with
Christian Maloney who allowed one hit over two innings before being lifted for
Tim Geissel who surrendered three runs on four hits in an inning of work. Patrick Maguire was saddled with two runs in two-thirds of a frame while
Jason Wall yielded one walk and recorded four outs.
Christian O'Brien let in a run and recorded two outs while
Logan Persse (3-1) was credited with the win after throwing 3.1 shutout innings.
The Cardinals strung together 11 hits in the win led by
Noah Campanelli, Beimel, Lemire and Perry who had two hits apiece.
The Cardinals will begin a four-game home-and-home series with Utica University at 1 p.m. on Saturday with an Empire 8 twin-billing in Utica.
