KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College softball team capped of its conference schedule on Saturday with a pair of shutouts as the Cardinals swept Keuka College in an Empire 8 doubleheader. With the wins, Fisher, which can secure the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship should Alfred University be swept on Sunday at Russell Sage, improved to 15-17 on the year and 11-3 in league play while the Wolves closed out the afternoon at 2-22 overall and 1-13 against Empire 8 opposition.
FISHER 8, KEUKA 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
The Cardinals' offense was firing on all cylinders in the top of the first as Fisher plated five runs on six hits to hold an early lead. The visitors quickly loaded the bases with back-to-back singles from
Amalia DeMartino and
Maddie Donlin before
Abby Flakus reached first base with a walk. With no outs,
Allison Rogowski drove in a run with a fielder's choice before a two-run triple to left by
Allie Klonowski made it 3-0. From there,
Mari Spitz singled home a run before
Emma Smith followed suit with a run-scoring hit of her that made it a five-run game.
Following a scoreless second inning, the Cardinals struck again in the top of the third with three more runs with Claire Boegel,
Becca Irizarry and Flakus each collected an RBI in the inning as the lead grew to 8-0.
Holding a sizeable lead,
Cassidy Ormond took care of the rest as the freshman moved to 6-7 in the circle after holding the Wolves scoreless over four frames. Ormond finished with four strikeouts and scattered four hits in all before being lifted for
Jenna Leydecker who pitched a perfect fifth inning to close things out.
FISHER 10, KEUKA 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
Jess Patterson returned to the circle where she allowed just one hit over five innings and improved to 2-5 on the year. An All-Region selection last season, Patterson finished with eight strikeouts and notched her second shutout of the season.
The Cardinals mustered 12 hits in the win led by Flakus who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Donlin was 2-for-3 in the win with two RBI and a double while DeMartino had two hits in the game and scored two runs. Klonowski was 2-for-4 overall with an RBI while Spitz had two hits including a double and was credited with one RBI.
Following a scoreless first inning, Fisher blew the game open in the top of the second with five runs before scoring two more in the fourth and a pair in the fifth to close out the sweep.
The Cardinals will close out their regular season schedule on the road as they make their way north on Monday to take on Clarkson University in a non-conference doubleheader in Potsdam. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
