ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team capped off a perfect regular season in conference play on Tuesday after defeating Alfred University, 2-1, inside Yunevich Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 8-7 on the year and 6-0 in the Empire 8 standings while the Saxons fell to 2-11 overall and remained winless in league play at 0-5.
In all, 10 different players finished with at least one point in the win led by
Kathleen Salanger who posted a career-high seven points after scoring four goals and assisting on three others.
Courtney O'Dea added five points on three goals and a pair of assists in the win while
Sydney Carpenter, who was named the Empire 8 Player of the Week on Monday, netted two goals, dished out two assists and snared six ground balls and five draw controls overall.
Emma Biel posted a career-high two goals and two assists for head coach
Linda Michele and
Cara Landry found the back of the net three times for the Cardinals.
Mykenzie Black scored twice and assisted on one goal while
Bianca Giacona and
Farrah Zalla were credited with two goals apiece.
After jumping ahead 12-0 through the first 30 minutes of play, Fisher continued to pour it on to begin the third quarter with O'Dea and Giacona scoring back-to-back tallies in a span on 90 seconds to make it a 14-goal gap.
As the game wore on, the margin widened as Carpenter netted two straight goals over two minutes before a mark from O'Dea as time expired in the third made it 18-0 with 15 minutes still left in the game.
With the game well in hand, Fisher's offense produced two more goals before the Saxons finally broke through after having been held scoreless for nearly 54 minutes.
In goal,
Lilly Goodsell moved to 8-7 on the year after making two saves over 60 minutes.
The Cardinals, who have already clinched the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship and have earned the right to host the upcoming conference tournament, will close out their regular season at 4 p.m. on Thursday when they host SUNY Geneseo as a part of Senior Day inside Growney Stadium.
