YORK, Pa. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday against the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans as the Cardinals shook off an opening game loss to take the second game, 17-4. With the split, Fisher moved to 7-8 on the year while York closed out the day at 8-9.
YORK 12, FISHER 4
After giving up seven runs and being limited to just one hit through seven innings, Fisher's bats finally came to life in the top of the eighth as the visitors produced four runs on five hits.
Luke Duffy got the inning going with a one-out double to left before
James Murphy stepped in and slugged a two-run home run to cut the gap to five runs.
Nick Lemire kept the rally going with a single up the middle while
Erik Charnetski reached after being hit by a pitch before eventually coming around to score when
Patrick Kravitz singled in a run with a two-out base hit to left. Jimmie McCardle entered the game as a pinch hitter and quickly drove in a run with a double down the left field line before the Spartans could retire the side.
Holding a 7-4 lead heading to the home half of the frame, York responded with a big inning of its own after plating five runs on four hits before shutting the door in the top of the ninth for a 12-4 decision.
Alec Teska (0-3) was credited with the loss after giving up six earned runs on 11 hits over five innings of work.
Cole Hedden let in a run on one hit and three walks over two frames while
Nathaniel Kilburn yielded five runs (three earned) over one-third of an inning.
Jason Wall pitched the final two outs.
FISHER 17, YORK 4
The Cardinals struck first in the nightcap with
Noah Campanelli leading off the top of the first with a double before coming around to score when
Dominic Guccia lifted a sacrifice fly to give Fisher a 1-0 edge.
After giving two runs back in the bottom of the first, Fisher leveled the game in the top of the fourth as
Michael Beimel drilled a solo homer to make it 2-2 heading to the fifth.
With the game knotted up, Fisher batted around and sent 12 hitters to the plate as York surrendered eight runs on five hits including two RBI-singles from
Brian Norsen and a homerun from Campanelli to fall behind, 10-2.
The Cardinals would tack on two more runs in the top of the sixth when Beimel connected for a double that played McCardle and Kravitz to push the lead to 10 heading into the home half of the sixth.
The Spartans would get a run back in the next inning, but were unable to get off the field quickly in the top of the seventh as Fisher's bats continued to connect with four more runs on one hit and an error to make it a 16-3 affair.
From there, York plated a run in the bottom of the eighth before Campanelli clubbed his second homer of the game in the top of the ninth en route to a 13-run win.
Michael Poirier opened the game for Fisher and allowed two runs over two innings before giving way to
Connor McHugh (2-1) who earned the win after yielding one unearned run over four innings to go along with four strikeouts.
Russell Dunlap pitched two frames and gave up one run on two hits while
Joseph Tronetti pitched a perfect ninth.
The Cardinals will make their way across town at 3 p.m. on Wednesday when they take on SUNY Brockport in a nine-inning tilt in Brockport.
