PITTSFORD, N.Y. – In the team's home opener, the St. John Fisher College softball team dropped both games against the University of Rochester Tuesday evening inside the Softball Complex. With the losses, Fisher, moves to 0-8 on the season, while Rochester improves to 4-12.
FISHER 4, ROCHESTER 9
After getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, the Cardinals were unable to bring a run to the plate after
Amalia DeMartino reached on an error in the bottom of the 1st.
From there, starting pitcher Jess Paterson threw two more shutout innings before Rochester notched a pair of hits to put runners on the corners in the top of the 4th. A Yellowjackets bunt forced Patterson into a tough throw to first, resulting in an error and a run to score. Another error from the Cardinals and a pair of hits from the Yellowjackets would bring home three more to give Rochester a 4-0 lead.
With the Cardinals struggling at the plate and trying to keep the game close, head coach
Bari Mance looked for
Jenna Leydecker to shut down Rochester. After two scoreless the Cardinals finally found some momentum at the plate as
Becca Irizarry led off the bottom of the 6th with a triple to left field. A groundout and strikeout would put the scoring opportunity in jeopardy before a single up the middle from
Abby Flakus would put a run on the board for Fisher.
The comeback was short lived however as Rochester would put a five spot in the top of the 7th after tallying six hits in the inning.
Trailing 9-1 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Fisher would not go down easily as
Emma Smith reach on a single followed by an
Allie Klonowski RBI triple off the left field wall. The Cardinals would add another run due to a
Maddie Donlin single but it was not enough as Rochester earned the victory 9-4.
Klonowski and Spitz led the offense as they both tallied two hits in the game, while Donlin and DeMartino each drove in a run.
Patterson suffered the loss (0-4) after four innings allowing four runs (three earned) off five hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Leydecker came in from the bullpen to pitch three innings and allowed five runs off nine hits with one strikeout.
FISHER 3, ROCHESTER 11
Still looking for the first win of the season, the Cardinals offense came out hot as a walk from Irizarry and a sacrifice bunt from DeMartino put a runner in scoring position with one out. With Flakus at the plate, the senior delivered on an RBI sacrifice fly to right, to put the score 1-0.
The next inning, Rochester would put four runs on the board after a pair of singles and a homerun to give the Yellowjackets a 4-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the 2nd, the Cardinals found two runners on first and second before an RBI sacrifice fly from Irizarry cut the lead to 4-2.
As the game wore on, Rochester held a 4-2 edge before driving in six runs in the top of the 5th gave the Yellowjackets a 10-2 lead. The Cardinals would cut the lead to seven in the bottom of the inning after
Clare Boegel lined an RBI triple down the line.
Rochester would hold the lead and score one more before defeating Fisher, 11-3.
DeMartino went 2-for-3 in the game, while Boegel and Flakus each drove in an RBI.
Ainsley Evanetski pitched 4.1 innings and suffered her first loss on the year (0-1) after allowing six runs off four hits with seven strikeouts.
Cassidy Ormond came in to pitch 2.2 innings allowing five runs off seven hits with two strikeouts.
The Cardinals will be back in action at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday as the travel to Oswego to take on Oswego State.
