AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team was in action on Friday as the Cardinals split a doubleheader with Immaculata University to begin play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. With the split, Fisher moved to 2-4 on the season while Immaculata finished the day at 5-4.
IMMACULATA 13, FISHER 1 (SEVEN INNINGS)
After falling behind by a run in the top of the first inning, the Cardinals scored their lone run of the game in the home half of the frame when
Ben Lavery smacked a home run over the centerfield fence to level the game at 1-1.
From there, Immaculata scored in every inning but the top of the seventh to grab a 13-1 win in the opening game.
Connor McHugh (0-1) started on the mound for Fisher and allowed three runs on four hits over three innings. The junior struck out three before giving way to
Christian Maloney who was saddled with six runs on six hits over 1.1 innings of work.
Logan Persse came on in relief and recorded a double play before
Andrew Inglee pitched an inning and yielded four runs on four hits.
Cole Hedden threw the final frame and gave up one hit in all.
FISHER 8, IMMACULATA 1
After a scoreless first inning on play, Fisher struck first and plated a run in the top of the second after
Patrick Kravitz drove in
Evan Bowers who had singled up the middle earlier in the frame.
Leading 1-0 in the top of the third, Fisher added to its lead after a leadoff error came around to score on a groundout by
Michael Beimel to make it 2-0.
Holding a two-run cushion, the Cardinals gave one back in the bottom of the third, but countered in the top of the fourth after
Nick Lemire worked a leadoff walk and came around to score when Kravitz lifted a sacrifice fly to left to make it 3-1.
After tacking on another run in the top of the fifth, Fisher padded its lead with four runs on the strength of just one hit paired with four steals to grab an 8-1 edge.
Tim Geissel picked up his first win of the season after going 5.0 innings and allowing a single run on six hits. The lefty struck out four and allowed just one walk in the win.
Joseph Tronetti pitched one inning while Persse finished off the game with a double play.
The Cardinals are scheduled to be back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday when they take on Dickinson College in a doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
