UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team had its five-game winning streak come to a close on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals fell to Utica College, 72-46, in an Empire 8 showdown inside the Clark Athletic Center. With the defeat, Fisher slipped to 18-6 on the year and 12-3 in the league standings while the Pioneers improved to 19-3 overall and 12-1 against conference opponents.
Daniel Cook secured his 16th double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three steals while
Joe Morrell added 10 points off the bench.
Brendan Trapper netted nine points and had four rebounds in the loss while
Ian Duncan contributed eight points and seven rebounds.
After falling behind by eight points at halftime, Fisher quickly cut the gap to five to begin the second half as Duncan buried a 3-pointer to make it 34-29 in Utica's favor.
Holding a two-possession lead, the Pioneers began to pull away as the frame wore on after building a 17-point cushion courtesy of a 14-2 run.
Trailing 51-34 with just over 13 minutes showing on the clock, the Cardinals would pull to within 13 following a lay-up from Cook, but the Pioneers kept their foot on the gas and scored 16 of the game's next 19 points to open up a 26-point edge with 3:19 left to play.
Overall, Fisher was 16-for-62 from the field (.258) and held a slim advantage on the glass after out-rebounding its host, 45-42.
Fisher will have one final tune-up before the postseason as it caps off its regular season schedule at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Elmira College inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.
