Walker's Double-Double Leads No. 22 Fisher Past Houghton; Cardinals in First Place in E8

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Junior Kaitlyn Walker produced her ninth double-double of the season on Tuesday as the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Houghton College behind a 65-46 win inside the Nielsen Center.  With the victory, Fisher, which moved up one spot to 22 in the latest D3hoops.com poll, improved to 17-2 and 9-1 in the Empire 8 while the Highlanders fell to 7-12 overall and 1-9 against league opponents.

Walker finished with a game-high 22 points on 11-of-17 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds while Miranda Lynch netted eight points and handed out four assists.  Amy Gardner chipped in with seven points, 11 rebounds and three steals while Sidney Tomasso, who was named the Empire 8 Rookie of the Week on Monday, contributed seven points, five assists and four rebounds in the win.

After falling behind by three points following the first 10 minutes of play, Fisher used a 12-0 run in the second quarter highlighted by five points from Gardner to pull ahead, 25-19.

With the half ticking down, both teams continued to battle down the stretch with Lynch sinking a 3-pointer at the buzzer on a feed from Katie Moravec to send both teams into the locker room with the Cardinals holding a 32-25 edge.

Both teams continued to trade baskets throughout the third period with Lauren Nawojski staking the visitors to an 11-point cushion with a jumper just outside the paint to make it 49-38 leading into the final frame.

Facing a double-digit gap with 10 minutes to play, Houghton was unable to contain Fisher's offense as the Cardinals went on a 12-2 burst that ate up nearly five minutes and pushed the visitors' advantage to 22 points before the final horn sounded.

In all, the Cardinals were 28-for-65 (.431) from the floor and were credited with 20 assists.  Head coach Melissa Kuberka's team committed a season-low nine turnovers in the win and forced the Highlanders in to 15 mishaps overall.

Fisher will go for its fourth straight win at 5:30 p.m. on Friday when it welcomes Hartwick College to Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium in a meeting between two of the Empire 8's top teams.
