ONEONTA, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's basketball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Cardinals, who are ranked 19th in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, lost to Hartwick College, 65-56, inside Lambros Arena. With the defeat, Fisher moved to 10-1 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8 standings while the Hawks improved to 7-3, 2-0, respectively.
Claire Kruszka led the team with 12 points paired with five rebounds while
Amy Gardner added 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
Leah Koonmen contributed 11 points and grabbed nine boards while
Sidney Tomasso netted seven points over 30 minutes.
After falling behind by nine points following the first quarter of play, Fisher was unable to shake off its slow start in the second as the Hawks eventually built a double-digit lead at the break.
The home team's advantage grew to as many as 21 points before the Cardinals chipped away and used a 9-0 burst as part of a larger 14-2 run to pull to within seven points with 1:33 still to play in regulation.
Trailing 55-48, Fisher resorted to fouling in an effort to conserve time, but was unable to close the margin as the Hawks went 7-of-10 from the charity stripe over the final 50 seconds.
In all, Fisher was 19-of-53 from the floor and committed 18 turnovers in the loss. The Cardinals accounted for five steals and were out-rebounded by the Hawks, 42-39.
Up next, the Cardinals will look to begin a new winning streak at 5:30 p.m. on Friday when they return home to take on the Utica College Pioneers in an Empire 8 tilt inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.
