PITTSFORD N.Y. – In bounce back fashion, the St. John Fisher College men's basketball defeated Elmira College, 79-45, on Saturday evening in an Empire 8 matchup inside Speidel Gymnasium. With the win, Fisher improves to 10-4 overall, and 4-1 in the Empire 8, while Elmira moves to 2-11 overall and 0-4 in the conference, respectively.
Junior
Daniel Cook notched his eighth double-double on the season after scoring 22 points along with 14 rebounds, while freshman
Connor Williams came off the bench to score 13 points paired with six rebounds and six assists. Seniors
Ryan Gentile and
Ian Duncan both finished with eight points followed by
Brendan Trapper who produced six points and six rebounds.
The Cardinals jumped out to a comfortable lead with a 20-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the half, sparked by a Duncan fast break layup from
Sean Williams.
From there, the Soaring Eagles clawed their way back to make it nine-point game as the Cardinals went into the locker room holding a 40-31 advantage.
With the second half underway, head coach Mike Grosodonia's squad rallied defensively, holding Elmira to only 14 second half points.
The Cardinals controlled the second half as Cook steered the offense to generate a 25-4 run, giving the road team a 69-42 lead with just five minutes to go.
With just seconds left, Fisher was able to dribble the clock out and solidify their fourth conference victory, 79-45.
As a team, Fisher shot 29-69 from the floor, and 18-25 from the free throw stripe, as well as 46 of its 79 points coming from inside the paint. The Cardinals dominated the rebounding battle grabbing 59 boards that included 13 second chance points.
Fisher will be back in action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to face off against the Alfred Saxons in another Empire 8 matchup.
