PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Sophomore goalie
Sophia Trozzi made a career-high 16 saves on Sunday as the St. John Fisher College field hockey team had its two-game winning streak ended after falling to the top-ranked Middlebury College Panthers, 6-0, in a non-conference showdown inside Growney Stadium. With the loss, Fisher fell to 3-4 on the year while the visitors remained perfect at 7-0.
The Panthers took control early with two first quarter goals before doubling their lead in the second period with tallies in the 23rd and 29th minutes to take a four-goal cushion into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Cardinals looked to chip away, but Middlebury padded its lead and took a 5-0 edge after scoring in the 43rd minute.
As the fourth quarter got underway, Fisher pushed the pace and was awarded two penalty corners, but the Panthers' defense cleared the threat to hold Fisher at bay. Middlebury tacked on a late goal in the 52nd minute with a penalty shot to remain undefeated on the year.
Trozzi played all 60 minutes in goal for Fisher and finished the day at 3-4 for the season.
The Cardinals will look to start a new winning streak at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when they welcome the University of Rochester Yellowjackets to campus for another non-conference battle on the turf inside Growney Stadium.
