FREDONIA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team earned its fourth win of the season in a 1-0 blanking of the Fredonia Blue Devils at University Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improved to 4-1 on the year with the victory, while Fredonia was handed its first setback of the year and fell to 3-1-1.
The Cardinals got off four early shots in the first half, but they only needed one to separate themselves from the hosts. 22 minutes into the game,
Carli Kovarik broke free and unleashed a shot from outside the penalty box which soared above the reach of the opponent's keeper and struck the back of the net. The goal was the senior's sixth of the season, as her 1.20 goals per game average and three game-winning goals both lead the Empire 8 Conference.
The visitors continued to press on, taking a total of 12 shots and five corner kicks before time expired, while the Blue Devils had 14 attempts at net and just three corners.
Fisher's back line of
Jessica Aldred,
Lakin Woodward,
Jennifer Kirker, and
Siobhan McMakin stood tall, allowing just six of the opponents' shots to reach – and be saved by – Cardinals' keeper,
Halle Tickell. The senior recorded all 90 minutes in net in the shutout, while her record moves to 3-0.
Kovarik's seven shots led the Cardinals, while
Kayla Rhude attempted a pair of shots and
Isabella Guarracino,
Emma Spelman, and
Tori Cruz each took one.
Fisher is back at home this Tuesday night, September 21st, for its final non-conference game before Empire 8 competition begins, as the Cardinals take on Ithaca College in a 5 P.M. bout.
