Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

DeBonis Named MVP as Women's Volleyball Earns Two More Wins in Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Lindsey DeBonis was named the Most Valuable Player while both Alea Steigerwald and Delayne Young were named to the All-Tournament Team as the St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team picked up two more wins on Saturday after blanking Potsdam and the host Lakers at the Oswego State Invitational inside Max Ziel Gymnasium.  With the wins, Fisher, which has now won its last five matches, improved to 8-3 on the year.

FISHER 3, POTSDAM 0

Young finished with 10 kills on 26 attempts in the match to go along with nine digs and two aces while DeBonis added seven kills of her own and eight digs.  Steigerwald, who became just the fourth player in team history to surpass 1,000 career kills and digs on Friday, finished with six kills, eight digs and three aces.

Katie Leaty added 23 assists and seven digs in the win while Julia Halsey posted a team-high 14 digs of her own.

FISHER 3, OSWEGO 0

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with Steigerwald at the service line, but Oswego clawed its way back into contention after scoring four of the match's next six points to pull to within two, 6-4.

Both teams swapped points as the set wore on until Fisher built a five-point cushion after a kill by Young and an attacking error by the Lakers made it 15-10.  From there, momentum shifted as Oswego took charge and went on a 7-2 run that leveled the frame at 17 points aside and forced Fisher into a timeout.

Coming out of the break, Fisher broke a 19-19 tie with back-to-back kills from Steigerwald, but the Lakers countered with two points of their own to keep pace, but then made two key errors down the stretch as Fisher forged ahead, 23-21.

From there, head coach Kelly Greapentrog's team put the set away with kills from DeBonis and Leaty to hold on for a 25-22 decision.

After routing the Lakers in the second set, 25-15, Fisher continued to take advantage of unforced errors at the net and used a 7-0 run to open up a 9-5 lead in the third.  The visitors would go on another deep run, this time resulting in 10-1 burst that made it 21-9 en route to a 25-13 win.

DeBonis finished the match sporting a .345 hitting percentage with 11 kills while Steigerwald followed suit at .381 with 11 kills of her own and 11 more digs.  Kara Balmer came up big at the net with seven kills while Leaty finished with 28 helpers in all.

The Cardinals will begin their quest for their third consecutive Empire 8 title at 6 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Elmira College in a conference pairing inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.
