ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior
Nicholas Miller of the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team became the program's all-time leading scorer on Saturday as the Cardinals who are ranked 14th in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll, defeated host Nazareth College, 17-6, in a non-conference battle inside Golden Flyer Stadium. With the win, Fisher improved to 6-3 on the year while Nazareth fell to 1-5 following the loss.
Miller, who finished the day with four goals and an assist, moved into sole possession of first place in team history with 225 career points, passing Dave Malone in the process. Miller is also Fisher's all-time leader in goals with 163.
It was all Fisher over the first 30 minutes as the Cardinals built a 9-1 lead before two goals from
Austin Jobson and
Joe Post within a span of 20 seconds sent Fisher into the locker room holding an 11-1 edge at halftime.
As the third period got underway, Nazareth found a rhythm with two goals, but was unable to contain Fisher on the other end as Fisher closed out the frame with three unanswered goals including back-to-back man-up tallies from
Jordan Depetres and
Jacob Risavi to take a 15-3 cushion into the final quarter.
With 15 minutes remaining in the game, Nazareth strung together consecutive goals to pull to within 10, but
Ian Evans halted the Golden Flyers' momentum as the Lafayette native whipped a pass to Miller who fired one into the back of the net to break the record and give the Cardinals a 16-5 edge.
As the game wore on, Nazareth would get one back, but the Cardinals countered with a goal of their own as
Tucker O'Donnell hit
Brennan O'Brien to give Fisher a 17-6 win.
Evans led all scorers with seven points including two goals a game-high five assists. Miller finished with four goals and a helper while both O'Donnell and
Jack Mulvihill added a goal and three assists apiece. Depetres and Risavi netted two goals each while
Matthew Kemmis, Post,
Tyler Edinger, Jobson and O'Brien rounded out the goal scoring.
Post was 13-of-22 in the faceoff game and scooped up a team-high five groundballs while
Roger Panara and Kemmis collected four groundballs each.
In goal,
Darin Eakins moved to 6-3 on the year after allowing six goals over 60 minutes of play. The graduate student made 12 stops in the win.
Fisher will go for its fourth straight win at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it travels to Cortland for a tough non-conference bout at Red Dragon Stadium.
