ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team remained atop the Empire 8 standings following a sweep of Elmira College on Friday at Dunn Field. With the wins, Fisher, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, extended its winning streak to seven games and improved to 19-4 overall and 10-0 in the conference while the Soaring Eagles fell to 3-18 on the season and 1-5 against Empire 8 opponents.
FISHER 14, ELMIRA 4
After plating two runs in the top of the first inning courtesy of a two-run home run from
Brian Norsen, Fisher busted the game open in the next frame with five runs on six hits and an Elmira error to hold a 7-0 edge.
Patrick Kravitz got the inning going with an RBI on a fielder's choice before
Justin Graham stepped in and lined a two-run single up the gut. Norsen came through with his third RBI of the game before
Luke Duffy doubled home a run to make it a seven-run affair.
The Cardinals tacked on another run in the top of third with an RBI-double from Kravitz, but the Soaring Eagles countered in the home half of the third with two runs on three hits to pull to within six.
After swapping a run in the fifth inning, the Cardinals manufactured five more runs on three hits with the big blow coming from
James Ward, Jr. who crushed a three-run shot down the left field line to give the visitors a 14-3 cushion.
Elmira had two on in the bottom of the seventh and pushed one run across before
Christian O'Brien shut the door and struck out the side to end the game.
Anthony Brophy moved to 5-0 on the season after allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings of work. The lefty struck out five and walked a pair before being lifted for O'Brien who yielded one run on two hits and fanned three in an inning.
FISHER 15, ELMIRA 3
The Cardinals carried their momentum into the nightcap and jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the first four innings and never looked back.
In the fifth inning, head coach
Brandon Potter's squad plated three more runs with Ward, Jr. hitting his second home run of the day to make it 11-0.
Leading by a large margin,
Ben Lavery showcased his power in the sixth with a grand slam to make it 15-1 in the visitors favor.
Alec Teska earned the win for Fisher and closed out the day at 3-1. The righty went 6.2 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts.
Michael Heilig recorded the final out for Fisher in the bottom of the seventh.
Fisher and Elmira will face one another again at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they swap home venues and play another Empire 8 doubleheader at Dugan Yard.
