ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team suffered their first setback of the spring season with a 0-1 overtime loss to the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College at the Nazareth Artificial Turf on Monday evening. The Cardinals dropped to 2-1 overall with the defeat, while Nazareth brought their own record to 2-1, meeting Fisher at the top of the Empire 8 standings.
A chippy affair from the very get-go, the two teams registered 35 fouls throughout the course of regulation. Despite the heated competition, the teams had equal opportunities from corner kicks and at the net. After 90 minutes, the teams registered 10 shots and three corner kicks apiece.
Fisher's scoring chances all came in regulation minutes from the feet of
Ryan Brown and
Matt Gentile, who uncorked three shots each,
Ben Woolingham, who had two attempts, and
Cam Webb and
Jeff Meyers, who each added a shot of their own.
The Cardinals best and last opening to score came as the match headed into its' 86
th minute. Meyers got loose and made a valiant attempt that was blocked by the Golden Flyer defense, and Gentile retained the ricochet to pull out a shot of his own, only to be saved by the opponent's keeper.
Deadlocked with no score, the game headed into the overtime period to decide a victor via sudden death. Just under three minutes into the period, a Nazareth forward gained possession and broke to a free ball, halfway between himself and Fisher keeper,
Jadon Schlierf. The freshman goalie was half a step short to the freebie and the Golden Flyers chipped in the golden goal.
Schlierf took his first loss in goal for Fisher, in which he recorded four saves on 11 shots faced, just five of which were on target.
Fisher has a scrimmage with the University of Rochester on Wednesday, March 31, but the Cardinals will conclude their 2021 home schedule at 3 P.M. on Friday, April 2 when the Russell Sage Gators come to Growney Stadium for Senior Day.
