Men's Basketball Clinches First Round Bye in E8 Championship With Drubbing of Keuka

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team secured a first-round bye and inched closer to landing the top overall seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship as the Cardinals won their seventh straight game after dispatching the Keuka College Wolves, 79-48, on Friday in an Empire 8 bout inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.  With the win, Fisher moved to 9-1 on the year and remained unblemished in the Empire 8 standings at 9-0 while the Wolves fell to 1-8 on both fronts.

After limiting Keuka to just seven field goals and forcing the Wolves into 13 first half turnovers, the Cardinals were in the driver's seat at the break with a comfortable 18-point lead.

The Cardinals continued to keep their foot on the gas as the second half got underway with the home team stringing together a 7-3 run to hold a 20-point edge with 13:33 left to play.

As the half wore on, the Wolves cut the gap to 19 with a 3-pointer from the corner, but Fisher knocked down five of six shots and scored 14 unanswered points in a span of two minutes to extend its advantage to 76-43 with the final horn fewer than two minutes away.

Brendan Trapper led all scorers with 18 points to go along with nine rebounds while Daniel Cook, who was named the Empire 8 Player of the Week on Monday, finished with another double-double that included 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.  Sean Williams contributed nine assists, five steals and four rebounds in the win while Nick Klein netted 13 points off the bench.  Louden Porter was 3-for-4 from distance for nine points and Ryan Gentile chipped in with nine points and three boards in 19 minutes.

The Cardinals were 29-for-63 from the floor and finished with 18 assists.  Overall, Fisher controlled the glass with 46 rebounds and turned Keuka over 20 times.

With just two regular season games remaining, Fisher will hit the road at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to Alfred to take on the Saxons in a pivotal Empire 8 test.
