PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 11 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team put on an offensive showcase on Wednesday afternoon as the Cardinals defeated Utica College, 20-4, in a non-conference bout at Growney Stadium. Fisher jumps out to a 3-0 overall record, while the Pioneers dropped their third straight game to start the season at 0-3.
Alyssa Sproule had a game-high six goals for the Cardinals on two perfect free position trips and just eight shots on the day. The six goals were a career-high for the senior and the most goals by an individual in a game since
Mallory Eymer in 2020.
Junior
Logan Chase had four goals and an assist on the day for a total of five point. Rounding out the scoring for Fisher included
Brittany Halpin,
Alyssa Sabotka,
Sydney DeGirolamo, and
Mackenzie Alexander who added a pair of goals each, and
Courtney O'Dea and
Kathleen Salanger who also scored in the win.
The Cardinals not only dominated the scoreboard, but also at draw control, with a 20-6 advantage. With a game-high 10 draw controls, DeGirolamo has moved up the program's all-time draw control list and now sits at number three with 162. Chase, Alexander, Sabotka, and
Dommie Giacona split the home team's remaining 10 draw controls.
Fisher got hot just over two minutes into play, as DeGirolamo scooped up a ground ball to transition into Sproule's first goal of the contest.
The lead remained at just one for the first five minutes of play, until defender
Shannon Foster landed a check and turned the ground ball into a Fisher goal, scored by Alexander. Over the next minute and a half of play, the Cardinals landed two more in the back of the Utica net, scored by Chase and Halpin.
After Utica netted their first goal, the Cardinals followed up with six straight goals, including two on free positions. Another goal for each side brought the matchup to 11-2 in favor of Fisher going into the break.
Sproule scored back-to-back goals to open the second half. Following Utica's third goal of the evening, Fisher scored seven of the contest's last eight goals, to finish the night with a final score of 20-4.
Claudia Mocciaro got the win in goal for Fisher after tallying just over 46 minutes between the pipes. The reigning Empire 8 Goalkeeper of the Week had four saves in the matchup.
The last time the Cardinals scored 20 or more goals was on March 7, 2020 when Fisher routed Meredith College, 21-4.
Fisher meets their first nationally-ranked opponent on Saturday, March 20 when the Cardinals welcome No. 17 William Smith to Growney Stadium for a 3 P.M. start.
