PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College football team was on the wrong end of a 55-3 loss on Saturday as the Cardinals fell to nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland in an Empire 8 tilt inside Growney Stadium. With the defeat, Fisher, which celebrated and honored its senior class prior to the opening kickoff, fell to 4-5 on the year and 2-3 in the conference standings while the Red Dragons, who are ranked 15th in the latest D3football.com national poll, remained unbeaten at 9-0, 6-0, respectively.
The Cardinals totaled 169 yards on 55 plays including 133 yards through the air while the Red Dragons, who have already secured the Empire 8 Championship and a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship, accrued 339 total yards on 62 plays.
Michael Krafty was 10-for-21 in the loss for 67 yards and a pair of picks while
Joseph Torrillo completed six of his 11 passing attempts for 66 yards including a 30-yard hookup with
Richie Quinn in the fourth quarter.
On the ground,
Dahmir Pross handled the lion's share of the carries with 13 rushes for 50 yards including a season-long 33-yard scamper.
Alex Shudt had two carries for five yards while Torrillo picked up six yards on one rush.
Four different receivers hauled in a pass led by Quinn who had three grabs for 49 yards.
Shane O'Dea had three catches for 12 yards while
TySean Sizer had two receptions and 44 yards overall.
Peyton Nolan finished the day with two catches and nine yards.
Defensively,
Joe Miscia, who entered the game leading Division III with 104 tackles, paced Fisher with 16 total tackles. The sophomore also nabbed his first-career interception and had one pass breakup in the loss.
Evan Strassberger had 10 tackles while
Johnny Pagano was credited with a career-high nine stops.
Vince DiMonte had eight tackles for Fisher while
Kyle Vachon,
Anthony Manna,
Max Bates,
Matt Hogan and
Jarred Mills had four tackles apiece.
Ryan O'Dea finished two tackles and picked up the team's lone sack of the game.
The Cardinals punted seven times overall led by
Kyle Farewell who had six kicks and averaged 34.2 yards per try. The team's lone bright spot of the game came in special teams as Sizer and
Taurian Taylor combined to gain 171 yards in kick returns.
The Cardinals will look to close out the regular season at .500 at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Utica College to take on the Pioneers in another Empire 8 clash. A win would make the team ECAC Bowl eligible.
