Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Kovarik's Five Points Highlight Women's Soccer's 4-0 Senior Day Routing of Elmira

PITTSFORD, N.Y. Carli Kovarik tallied five points as the St. John Fisher College women's soccer team enjoyed a 4-0 Senior Day routing of Elmira College at Growney Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals head to the Empire 8 postseason with a 9-5-1 regular season record and 5-2-1 Empire 8 record, while they ended the Soaring Eagles' season with 3-12-3 and 0-6-2 records.

Before the action on the pitch began, however, the Cardinals took a moment to recognize the talents and contributions of its senior class. Fisher honored its seven seniors in the ceremony: Jessica Aldred, Alexis Gossage, Kovarik, Becky Mack, Madison Scull, Halle Tickell, and Lakin Woodward.

Fisher's electric offense contradicted the dreary fall rain, as the Cardinals found themselves at a goal's advantage just five minutes into the contest. On a set piece taken by Kovarik just south of midfield, Isabella Guarracino used her head to redirect the feed, which fell just past the reach of the visitor's keeper for the junior's second goal of the season.

The Cardinals then buckled down to take 12 more shots before the intermission, while the rotating defense of Aldred, Camryn Weller, Jennifer Kirker, Siobhan McMakin, Hanna LaRocca, and Grace Wolsieffer held the visitors to just one shot during the game's duration.

Just 34 seconds out of halftime, Tori Cruz connected on her third goal of the year fed by an Emma Osterhoudt cross to the middle of the field. The goal then opened up the midfield for Fisher striker and leading scorer, Kovarik, who nailed back-to-back goals in the game's 55th and 65th minutes for her Empire 8-leading 13th and 14th goals of the season, assisted by Osterhoudt and Kayla Rhude, respectively.

Fisher, who broke the 30-shot mark for the third time this season, was led by Kovarik with eight tries, Guarracino with five shots, Emma Spelman with four attempts, Rhude, Osterhoudt, and Kyra Kenyon, who each tallied a pair of cracks, and Gossage, Scull, McMakin, Wolsieffer, Cruz, Kathleen Rachwal, and Grace Hainsworth who shot once each.

Tickell, whose record defending the Cardinals' cage improved to 8-4-1, saved the lone Elmira shot of the contest, as the senior logged 81 minutes in goal, and earned her third shutout of the season.

Fisher now looks ahead to the Empire 8 Conference Championship, as the third-seeded Cardinals will travel to second-seeded Alfred University on Thursday.  Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Saxons' Yunevich Stadium.
